CROOKSTON GIRL’S SOCCER ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH A WIN IN WALKER

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Soccer team scored two goals in each half and defeated the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves 4-0 in Walker on Tuesday.

FIRST HALF –
The Pirates scored the game’s first goal for the second time in a row Tuesday. Senior Makenze Epema put the first goal in the net 19 minutes in, and scored another one seven minutes later to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead. Epema finishes the regular season with a team-high seven goals scored. “Everyone can see Kenze’s strong technical ability,” Crookston head coach Sarah Reese said. “What they don’t always see is her team spirited nature, distributing the ball to teammates when she could take it herself. She shows great leadership, being controlled and poised on and off the field. She gives 100 percent to everything she does.”

SECOND HALF –
The Pirates kept the momentum going over the final 40 minutes, as junior Olivia Huck scored her first goal of the season from 25 yards out on a direct free kick. Later on, with just five minutes to go in the game, freshman Cassie Solheim scored her second goal of the week and her sixth of the season from about eight yards away, putting the Pirates ahead 4-0. All four of Crookston’s goals Tuesday were unassisted. “This was a great team win,” Coach Reese said. “All of our seniors saw significant playing time. All of our seniors, Kenze, Joslynn Leach and Danielle Haake are a delight to be around. We now look forward to having some section tournament games.”

The Pirates, who improve to 3-7 on the season, have now scored a total of 18 goals in their 10 games this season. Eleven of their goals were scored against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, who fell to 0-9. The Section 8A boys’ and girls’ soccer tournament schedule has yet to be released by Section 8AA, which governs 8A soccer.
