Crookston Girls Soccer Lose Two at Melrose

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Soccer team had a difficult five-game schedule this week and combined with hot and humid conditions in Melrose, the Pirates lost to Cold Spring-Rocori 5-0 and lost to Melrose 7-2 in games played in Melrose.

Crookston vs Cold Spring-Rocori
The first half was a competitive half for the Pirates and they were able to get three shots on goal, but CSR scored halfway through the half to take a 1-0 lead.  The teams played even the rest of the half and Crookston trailed by a goal at halftime.
In the second half, CSR scored 11 minutes into the half and added two more goals in the next nine minutes to build a 4-0 lead halfway through the second half.  CSR added another goal with two minutes left for a 5-0 victory.
Crookston had one of their best shots on goal totals this season with seven, but they couldn’t solve the CSR goalie.

Crookston vs Melrose
In the second game of the day, Crookston had a great start with a Sophie Sanders goal eight minutes into the game and the Pirates led 1-0.  Melrose answered six minutes later to tie the game at one goal each.  It didn’t take long for Crookston to regain the lead when Ny Nhu Nguyen scored halfway through the half for a 2-1 Pirate lead.  Crookston held the lead for about 10 minutes until Melrose scored three goals in a five-minute span towards the end of the half for a 4-2 lead.
In the second half Melrose added a goal four minutes into the half and added two more goals for the 7-2 victory.  “We’ve had a busy week and we played well in the first half of both games,” said Pirate Coach Sarah Reese. “In the second half, the combination of the hot, humid conditions, missing a few players with prior commitments and having the busy week took a toll on us.”
The Pirates continued to make improvements and scoring two goals was one of the positives. “The girls keep improving.  We saw better passing and we put the ball in the net,” said Coach Reese. “We need to work on keeping possession by keeping the ball at our feet.”
Crookston drops to 0-8-1 on the year and travel to Detroit Lakes on Tuesday.
