The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Swim Team had a great meet but lost 105-60 to the Perham Yellowjackets in a dual at the Crookston Community Pool. “Today was a really good swim meet,” said Pirate Coach Marley Melbye. “Our younger girls had an outstanding meet today. We had a lot of time cuts from them, and that is what you want to see.”
Madison Hoiland led the Pirates with two first place and two second-place finishes. Madison won the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke. She was also on two second-place relay teams. “She is fun to watch,” said Coach Melbye. “Her 50 freestyle looked flawless, and she swims a little harder when she is being pushed.”
Claire Oman had a first place and three second-place finishes. Oman won the 200 meter IM with an impressive race. She finished second in the 100 freestyle and was on two second-place relay teams. “Claire had a great 200 IM and looked better than she has all year. She came out ready and came out a little harder than normal and performed,” said Coach Melbye. “Claire looked solid in her start in the fly, she looked strong in her breaststroke and won that race pretty handily.”
Mackenzie Aamoth had four second-place finishes. Aamoth finished second in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and she was on two second-place relay teams. “Mackenzie had some good races today,” said Coach Melbye. “She swam hard and ran into some pretty competition.”
Other highlights –
The younger swimmers cut a lot of time in the meet, which pleased Coach Melbye. “The girls have stopped looking at what place they finish in look more at what time they have,” said Coach Melbye. “Lucy Smith dropped 17 seconds off her 100 freestyle time and seven seconds off her breaststroke. Chloe Boll cut almost a minute off her 500 freestyle in a week and one day. Now that tennis is over, and she can focus on swimming, it will be fun to see what she can do.”
Mya Bower swam a few junior varsity races and cut some time. “Mya has more fun and loves the sport,” said Coach Melbye. “She has improved as the season has gone on. She came in this year, not knowing anything about swimming, and we enjoy having her on the team.”
Grace Meiner turned in her best time in the 100 breaststroke. “Grace is one that is still trying to find her strokes, and she cut considerable amounts of time,” said Coach Melbye. “She cut about 10 to 12 seconds, and it is fun to see her have some success.”
Crookston will travel to Fosston on Thursday for a dual with the Fosston-Bagley Seals.
