CROOKSTON GIRLS TENNIS FINISHES 2ND PLACE, FEE AND CLAUSON WIN CHAMPIONSHIP

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team had one individual champion, but showed off their team depth as they finished second place at the Crookston Pirate Booster Carla Johnson Memorial Tournament played at tennis courts across Crookston.  Hibbing won the tournament with 26 points, four points better than Crookston.  It was a long day with tennis going over nine hours with a lot of great matches played throughout the day.

First Round – 
Crookston had a solid first round while winning five of their seven matches and earning 10 team points in the process.  The two losses were close matches and overall it was a good start to the day as the Pirates had five in the semi-finals.  Crookston was tied for first place with Hibbing and New London-Spicer after the first round. 

Second Round –
Crookston won two semi-final matches with Halle Winjum cruising to a straight-set victory to advance to the championship, adding two more points to the team total.   The second doubles team of Addie Fee and Kaylie Clauson won their semi-final match in three sets to advance to the championship while adding two more points to the team total.  The only other point Crookston earned in the second round came with a consolation semi-final win at third singles with Brekken Tull winning in straight sets to advance to the consolation championship. 
Hibbing took over the team lead with eight second-round points for 18 total.  New London-Spicer earned 7 points for 17 and Crookston dropped to third place with 15 points, while Perham was a close fourth place with 14 points going into the final round. 

Final round – 
Crookston had two in the championship match.  Addie Fee and Kaylie Clauson beat a team from Detroit Lakes in straight sets to win the second doubles championship, the only one the Pirates would win on the day.  The Pirate win picked up two team points.  
The other Pirate in a championship was at first singles and Halle Winjum ran into a very good Katrina Hansen of Moorhead and lost in straight sets.  Halle finished second place.

Crookston faired well in their three third-place matches with Emma Gunderson beating Moorhead’s Kylie Torkelson to finish third place while earning the Pirates two more team points.  
Isabelle Smith had a great battle in the fourth singles third-place match while losing two extremely close sets 7-5, 7-6, and finished fourth place. 
Calleigh Fanfulik and Paige Abrahamson wrapped up a great day by beating a duo from Perham in three sets to finish third place while getting two team points. 

The final Pirate team point came from Brekken Tull at third singles.  After suffering a close loss in the first round, Brekken bounced back and won the next two matches to finish as the consolation champion.  Brekken, as she has a tendency to do,  wore down her opponent in the Consolation Championship match.  She lost the first set 6-4, before bouncing back to win the second set 7-6 and 7-3 in the tie-breaker.  In the third set, Brekken continued to battle and won the set 10-7 to end the day with a victory which gave the Pirates one more point to secure a second-place finish.
