The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team has all but two members of their tournament team back from last year, and the Roseau Rams graduated most of their tournament team from last year, and Crookston’s experience showed in a 6-1 victory in a Section 8A matchup at the Crookston High School Tennis courts in the season opener for both teams.
SINGLES
Crookston took a quick lead when Emma Osborn won her fourth singles match in about 33 minutes with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Halle Winjum won her third singles match 6-1, 6-0 to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Crookston completed the singles sweep to solidify the win with victories at first singles with Catherine Tiedemann winning 6-0, 6-0, and Hayden Winjum winning the second singles match 6-1, 6-0. “Singles came out and played as good as they could of today,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “All four of those girls came out and competed. It’s great to see the competitiveness between them and they all performed well.”
DOUBLES
Roseau picked up only win of the match at first doubles with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Roseau’s Kiersten Flaig and Lindsay McFarlane are two of Roseau’s top returners and they showed their strength and experience to win the match.
Crookston bounced back with a win at third doubles when Macy Fee and Abbie Borowicz won 6-3, 6-2 for a 5-1 lead. The second doubles match was the final match of the day after a long first set which Crookston’s Halle Bruggeman and Brekken Tull won 7-6, they cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set to give the Pirates a 6-1 match win. “It was a little bit of a slow start for all the doubles team, but they settled in and played better as the matches went along,” said Brekken. “I have a long list of things we will need to work on after the first match, which is expected. The girls played well and we have the typical start of the year stuff to work on.”
Crookston improves to 1-0 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in a newly added match to the schedule. “We added the match with East Grand Forks to the schedule on Friday at 10:00 a.m.” said Brekken. “We will have varsity and a chunk of J.V. playing in Crookston and another chunk of J.V. and Junior High going to East Grand Forks.” Roseau drops to 0-1 on the year.
