The Crookston Pirate Baseball team beat the Win-E-Mac Patriots by scoring five runs in the sixth inning to win 6-5 and lost to the Sacred Heart Eagles 5-4 in a split doubleheader played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.
CROOKSTON VS WIN-E-MAC
The Crookston Pirate Baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind to beat the Win-E-Mac Patriots 6-5 in a game played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.
Crookston had a threat in the first inning with runners at first and second base with one out, but they weren’t able to get a hit and stranded two runners.
In the top of the second inning, Win-E-Mac’s Remy Goodwin reached on an error and Dustin Osland and Anton Hickman had back-to-back singles before Alex Jacobson hit a two-run scoring single to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Crookston had two runners on base and the next two batters were retired.
Win-E-Mac added another run after a Crookston error for a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Crookston started the bottom of the third inning with a Leyton Salentine double and after he stole second base, he came into score on a Brady Butt single and the Pirates trailed 3-1 after three innings of play. “Leyton hit the ball hard today,” said Pirate Coach Mitch Bakken. “Brady has been hitting well too and it is nice to see him hitting well the past few games.” Crookston stranded eight runners in the first four innings. “It was nice to get guys on base,” said Pirate Coach Mitch Bakken. “We aren’t going to score everybody, but we need to go up with some energy and be excited to have a chance to drive in our teammates.”
Win-E-Mac added a run in the sixth inning after a hit batter, walk and error for a 4-1 lead. Crookston responded in a big way in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Pirates got things going when Jacob Miller reached on an error and stole second base. Brooks Butt pinch hit and had a rbi single to score Miller. The next batter grounded out, Leyton Salentine walked, Gavin Salem reached on an error, Butt scored on a wild pitch and Salentine scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4. With two outs, Walker Winjum singled to score Salem for a 5-4 lead. Crookston scored one more run on an error to take a 6-4 lead into the seventh inning. “The pitcher started to get tired and we had better approaches at the plate,” said Coach Bakken. “Walker is a talented hitter and it was nice to see hit get a big hit to give us the lead.”
In the top of the seventh inning, Win-E-Mac’s Nathan Fortman walked and scored on an Osland single to bring the Patriots within a 6-5 deficit with two outs. Salentine was able to get the next batter to hit a pop up behind home plate and the Pirate catcher Ashton Larson slid on his knees in the dirt right next to the cement wall backstop and made a catch off to his side for the final out and Crookston won the game 6-5. “That was a really nice catch,” said Coach Bakken. “We thought it was going to go out of play right away, but it stayed in play and he did a great job to make the play.”
Crookston improved to 2-3 on the year. Win-E-Mac drops to 5-6 on the year (after a loss to Sacred Heart later in the day)

CROOKSTON VS SACRED HEART –
Sacred Heart’s Brendan Bethke drew a two-out walk and Gage Wavra followed with an rbi single to right field to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. “You tip your hat to them on some nice hitting to score the first run,” said Coach Bakken.
Crookston answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Gavin Salem reached on an error with two outs. Brady Butt followed with a single to right field and the Sacred Heart right fielder overran the ball allowing Salem to score from first base to tie the game at 1-1. Jade Selzer was hit by a pitch and Brooks Butt reached on an error and two runs scored on the wild throw to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead. “We had some good at-bats and we put the ball in play and some good things happened,” said Coach Bakken.
In the second inning, Sacred Heart tied the game at 3-3 when they scored two runs after a walk and an error and an rbi single from Isaac Zavoral.
Crookston responded in the bottom of the winning with a run. Joe Doda walked and stole second base. Leyton Salentine struck out, but the ball got away from the catcher and he reached to put runners on the corners. Doda stole second base and on the throw to second the ball went into centerfield allowing Doda to score to give Crookston a 4-3 lead through two innings. “We had some speed on base and they can make things happen,” said Coach Bakken. ”
There was no scoring until the top of the sixth inning when Oscar Ortiz led off the inning with a double and came into score on a Sam Gapp single to tie the game at 4-4.
Sacred Heart struck again in the top of the seventh inning when Cullen Rohrich led off the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on a Brendan Bethke double for a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Crookston had a threat going when Leyton Salentine singled to lead off the inning, but he was thrown out on a stolen base attempt by an outstanding throw by the Sacred Heart catcher, Isaac Zavoral. The next two Pirate batters were retired and Sacred Heart won the game 5-4. “It was a fun high school baseball game. I was happy with how we played tonight and we battled for seven innings and that is all you can ask for,” said Coach Bakken. “Sacred Heart is a very good team and Win-E-Mac was a nice team so it was a great day of baseball and just nice to get two more games in today. I was happy, the pitching was good, the catchers were solid and we had some pretty good at-bats. It was an all-around good day for us.”
Crookston drops to 2-4 on the year and will host Warroad on Tuesday.
Sacred Heart improves to 6-4 on the year.
