Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball uses 10 threes and clutch free throws to take down Roseau

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team used fabulous shooting from the foul line and three-point line to hold off Jordan Borowicz’s 36 points and get an 82-70 victory of the Roseau Rams at the Crookston High School Gymnasium on Thursday night.

FIRST HALF
Roseau recorded the first two buckets of the game before Reggie Winjum three-pointer cut the lead to 4-3. After free throw, Nolan Johnson tied the game at 5, and from there both teams began to exchange buckets. The game was tied at 7, and after a Roseau bucket, Carter Fee hit one from downtown to put the Pirates up 10-9. The Rams answered right back with one of their own, and then Winjum got in on the fun, hitting another three-pointer to make it 13-12 Pirates. That score stuck for over 3 minutes before a Winjum layup gave the Pirates a three-point lead. Roseau didn’t score until there was 10 minutes remaining, when Jordan Borowicz recorded a three-point play to tie the game at 15. The game was then tied at 17, then at 19, before the Pirates took a 22-21 lead on a Nolan Passavant three-pointer. Borowicz answered with a two-pointer of his own, but the Pirates re-took the lead on two Winjum free throws. In the final five minutes, the teams continued to go back and forth with neither team getting a lead larger than 3 points. With 30 seconds left, Nolan Johnson tied the game at 32, and that’s what stood at the half.

SECOND HALF
The Pirates came out red hot to start the second half, opening the half on an 11-4 run in the first 5 minutes. Reggie Winjum, Gunnar Groven and Nolan Cassavant all hit threes in the run, putting the Pirates. Roseau began to claw back with two Jordan Borowicz free throws to cut the lead to five, and then came straight down the lane for a layup to cut the lead to three. Carter Fee stopped the momentum with a three to put the Pirates up 46-40, followed immediately by one from Beau Smith, quickly putting the Pirates up nine. With under 10 minutes to go, Roseau got a deep one from Aiden Evitts to cut the lead to six, but Winjum responded immediately with another one of his own to restore the 9-point advantage. Then, Smith hit two free throws to put the Pirates up by double figures with 8:47 remaining. Roseau banked in a three-pointer to cut the lead to eight, and then found themselves down 57-50 with seven minutes to go. Fouls began to catch up to the Rams, as the Pirates were put in the double bonus with 6:54 left. Winjum used the foul line to complete a three-point play to put the Pirates up 61-50, and then Smith added a bucket to put Crookston up 13 with 6 minutes to go. The lead ballooned all the way to 68-50 before the Rams scored again. Borowicz tried everything he could, getting his 30th point to cut the lead to 68-56, but the lead hovered around that number until a Borowicz breakaway cut the lead to 9 with 2:26 to go. However, the Rams did not have enough left in the tank, as the Pirates kept hitting free throws and making stops and they were rewarded with an 82-70 victory.

Crookston improves to 5-17 on the year and will travel to Warroad for another Section 8AA matchup on Tuesday. Roseau drops to 6-18.
