Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball comes short up at Barnesville

The Crookston Pirate Boys’ Basketball team played another solid game, but the Barnesville Trojans used a couple of runs to win the game 82-66 at the Barnesville High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston had a great start to the game on both ends of the floor as the offense made two three-pointers with Jack Everett and Tyler Michaelson connecting for a 6-0 lead. Barnesville’s first points game from Gannon Bolgrean three minutes into the game and he followed up with another basket to bring the Trojans within a 6-4 deficit. Crookston’s Reggie Winjum responded with a three-pointer for a 9-4 lead before Barnesville went on a 10-0 run over a two minute span with baskets from Grant Quiggle and Nicholas Robideau, which was followed by a pair of three-pointers from Bolgrean and Major Ness for a 14-9 lead with 11:25 left in the half. Crookston’s Winjum stopped the run with a three-pointer and Matt Contreras added a free throw to bring the Pirates within a 14-13 deficit. Barnesville scored the next four points before Winjum made two free throws and Crookston trailed 18-15. Barnesville went on another run, this time a 6-0 run with two points apiece from Jack Maesse, Bolgrean, and Quiggle for a 24-15 lead. Barnesville slowly built a 32-22 lead before Crookston’s Winjum made five straight points and the teams exchanged points the rest of the half and the Trojans took a 43-32 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Barnesville started the second half with a Robideau basket and a Bolgrean three-pointer for a 48-32 lead. Crookston’s Hunter Nicholas took over as he scored the next seven points for a 48-39 deficit less than four minutes into the half. Barnesville slowly built a 56-43 lead with Gannon Bolgrean scoring his 19th point of the game for the 1,000th point of his career. Crookston’s Everett, Winjum, and Michaelson all made a three-pointer, and Nicholas added a basket for an 11-0 run to get within a 56-54 deficit with 9:40 left in the game. Barnesville responded in a big way as they went on an 18-2 run with six points from Robideau, four points from Brady Nosal and Bolgrean, and two points apiece from Grant Quiggle and Jack Maesse for a 74-56 lead with 4:32 left in the game. The teams exchanged three-pointers before Crookston went on a 7-0 run with Winjum scoring five points and Nicholas adding a basket to get within a 77-66 deficit. Barnesville scored the final five points of the game and won 82-66.

Crookston drops to 3-10 on the year and will host Fertile-Beltrami on Monday. Barnesville improves to 12-4 on the year.
