MINNEWASKA AREA CRUISES TO A VICTORY OVER PIRATE BOYS TENNIS

The Crookston Pirates Boy’s Tennis team struggled in a 6-1 loss to Minnewaska Area in a Section 8A matchup played in Fergus Falls.  “This is not where we wanted to be against a similar talent team,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “Once we were down and the kids kind of got nervous and started to struggle.”
The weather was perfect and Minnewaska was almost perfect dominating the singles and winning two of the three doubles matches on their way to a victory.
The lone Crookston win came at first doubles with the duo of Blake Fee and Robert Janorschke winning their match by a 6-4, 6-3 score.  “One doubles played well and actually had a slow start and started to mesh well,” said Coach Brekken. “Once they started playing well they were picking each other up and played a pretty good match, especially since it was their first match together this year.”
The third doubles team of Dilon and Mason Owens played a competitive match at third doubles and had a good start with a 6-4 loss, but came up short in the second set.  “We had some competitive matches in the doubles,” said Coach Brekken. “We made some mistakes and it seemed like we were playing to not lose the point instead of winning the point.”
In singles, Nick Garmen started slow in his first singles match, but finished strong in a 6-1, 6-4, loss.  Jack Garmen had a similar match with a slow start, but a strong finish in a 6-1, 6-4 loss.  At third singles, Tanner Janorschke lost the first set 6-4 and lost the second set 6-0. “It was a little bit of a different line up today and they were asked to play in some different spots and if you think you aren’t going to play well, you probably won’t,” said Coach Brekken. “Most of the guys picked up their play in the second sets, which was nice to see.  The kids were making adjustments as the match went along and we have some things to work on and it is still early yet and we haven’t had a lot of time outside so we will need to work hard to get to where we need to be.”
Crookston drops to 0-4 in duals on the year and will host Detroit Lakes on Thursday.
