The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team battled, but came up short in a 6-1 loss to Minnewaska Area in the Section 8A Championship at Fargo Courts Plus.
CROOKSTON VS MINNEWASKA AREA
Crookston lost to Minnewaska Area 5-2 in the regular season and knew Minnewaska was going to be a tough team to beat and that proved to be true.
Minnewaska Area won the first, second, and third singles matches. At first singles, Minnewaska’s Tenzin Dahl came out strong and won the first set over Crookston’s Reggie Winjum 6-2, before cruising to a 6-0 second set victory to win the match. At second singles, Drew Bleick beat Crookston’s Grant Funk 6-1, 6-0. The Lakers singles players continued to dominate as Carter LeClair beat Crookston’s Gunnar Groven at third singles 6-0, 6-2.
Crookston’s lone singles win came at fourth singles with Sam Widseth winning the first set 6-2 before winning the second set 6-4.
In doubles, Minnewaska pulled off something that hasn’t been done much this year against the Pirates, as they won all three doubles matches. The first and second doubles matches were the best matches of the day as Minnewaska Area’s Marshall Kopp and Riley Thornfinnson outlasted Crookston’s Jack Everett and Hudson Rick to win a thrilling 7-6, 7-5 first doubles match. The second doubles match was the same score with Xavier Johnson and Landon Schiffler beating Crookston’s Colton Osborn and Alex Zammert 7-6, 7-5. Minnewaska completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Crookston’s Jacob Halvorson and Teagen Lubinski to win the match 6-1.
Minnewaska Area won its second straight Section 8A championship and will advance to the Minnesota State High School League Class A state tournament June 3-6. This improves its record to 18-6 on the year.
Crookston’s team season ended with a record of 12-9. The team will say goodbye to the following seniors: Jack Everett, Teagen Lubinski, Nicholaus Bachmeier, Michael Deng, and Codey Heinle.
