The Ada-Borup-West Cougars scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back as they beat the Crookston Pirate Football team 47-15 at KROX Radio Stadium in Crookston.
1st Quarter –
Crookston started the game with the ball and moved the ball a little bit on a 10 yard pass from Tate Hamre to Jose Arriaga for a first down. The Pirates were forced to punt a few plays later. After a 22 yard punt, Ada-Borup-West (ABW) took advantage of a short field. ABW had its first offensive series starting at the Crookston 45 yard line. The Cougars had a gains of 3, 5, 7, and 9 yard down to the 18 yard line. Braxton Hendricks took the next handoff 18 yards for the first score of the game. After a Braeden Bueng extra point kick, the Cougars led 7-0.
Crookston’s first play was an 18 yard run by Hamre. The next play was no gain, Jaron Knutson ran for four yards, Hamre ran for 23 yards and another first down. The offense sputterd and loss yardage on two plays and had an incomplete pass and then turned the ball over on downs.
ABW ran one play before Connor Nelson ran for 47 yards and a touchdown. After the Bueng kick was good, ABW led 14-0 with 1:18 left in the quarter.
Crookston threw an interception on the next possession and that set up a Connor Nelson 21 yard touchdown pass to Ames Fassino. The kick failed and ABW led 20-0 at the end of the opening quarter.
2nd Quarter –
Crookston started the second quarter with the ball and loss 12 yards on the first three plays and elected to punt and Jaron Knutson punted a low line drive that took a huge Pirate bounce and rolled down the field for a 55 yard punt and no return.
ABW ran for three yards, 10 yards and a few plays later it was Braxton Hendricks running for 60 yards and a touchdown. After the extra point kick was good, the Cougars led 27-0 over two minutes into the quarter.
Crookston tried to answer on the next drive as They had two runs for five yards before the delay of game peanlty. Crookston’s Zachariah Ali ran for 14 yards and a late hit gave the Pirates 15 more yards and a first down. The Pirates lost yardage on the next three plays and punted for 35 yards. The ABW returner fumbled the ball and Crookston’s Hamre recovered the ball on the Cougar 17 yard line.
A few plays later, Hamre scored on a 14 yard run and the Pirates trailed 27-6. Crookston kicked off and ABW returned the ball to their own 45 yard line. The next play was a Rudy Reyes 55 yard run for a touchdown for a one play 11 second drive and after the extra point was good for a 34-6 lead.
Crookston tried moving the ball down the field as Ali dumped a six yard pass to Jose Arriaga and the next play was a six yard pass to Dexter Janek , but the next three plays were incomplete passes and Paul Thornhill blasted a 59 yard punt. The Cougars ran out the clock and took a 33-6 lead into halftime.
3rd Quarter –
ABW started the second half with the ball and Connor Nelson ran for 23 yards, Hendricks ran for eight yards, Reyes ran for three more yards for a first down. A few plays later, Nelson dumped a pass to Fassino for a 15-yard touchdown and after the two-point conversion gave the Cougars a 41-6 lead three minutes into the half.
Crookston fumbled the ball on the ensuing kickoff and ABW recovered. Connor Nelson found Hendricks for a 46 yard touchdown pass and a 47-6 lead.
It didn’t take Crookston long to answer as the Pirates had the ball at their own 27 yard line and Tate Hamre go to the sideline and sprinted 73 yards for a touchdown to bring the Pirates within a 47-12 deficit with 7:25 left in the quarter.
ABW moved the ball down the field with an 11 yard Reyes run for a first down. Three plays later they had another first down before they put the second string in. A few plays later, the Cougars tried a deep pass and Crookston’s Jaron Knutson picked it off at the Crookston 30 yard line.
The Pirates had a great start to the drive with a 34 yard pass from Hamre to Jose Arriaga down the middle of the field. A few plays later the quarter ended with ABW leading 47-12.
4th Quarter –
Crookston started the fourth quarter with running time as ABW led by 35 points. They lost yardage on the first play of the quarter and turned the ball over on downs. ABW struggled to move the ball on their next drive and was forced to punt for the first time in the game. Crookston had the ball at their own 45 yard line and a few plays later the Pirates fumbled and the Cougars recovered the ball. Neither team had a sustained drive the rest of the game as it moved quickly with running time and ABW won the game 47-12.
Crookston drops to 1-4 on the year and will travel to Red Lake Falls next Friday to take on the #8 ranked Red Lake County Rebels at 7:00 p.m. Ada-Borup-West improves to 2-3 on the year.
