The Sacred Heart Eagles’ 6’0 junior, Lexi Lawrence, scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead her team to a 64-26 victory over the Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team at the East Grand Forks Sacred Heart High School gymnasium (The Merth) on Saturday night.
FIRST HALF –
Sacred Heart had a great start to the game as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead with 11:30 left in the half. Lexi Lawrence led Sacred Heart with six points, Leah Sundby had a three-pointer, and Brynn Stevens had an offensive rebound and basket. Crookston shook the cobwebs off the offense as it took a few minutes to get it going and Grace Boll gave her team a spark with a three-pointer that Halle Nicholas followed with a long-range make to get within an 11-8 deficit.
Sacred Heart’s Sundby made two free throws before Crookston’s Grace Boll made back-to-back three-pointers to give the Pirates a 14-13 lead with 8:39 to go in the half! Sacred Heart’s Lydia Riskey answered with two free throws to give the lead back to Sacred Heart. The Eagle lead was short-lived as Chloe Boll posted up and had a strong basket in the paint, and Crookston led 16-15 with 6:49 left in the half.
The Crookston offense went cold the rest of the half as Sacred Heart outscored the Pirates 11-2, with eight points scored by Lexi Lawrence, and Sundby added a three-pointer to take a 26-18 lead at halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Sacred Heart came out with a little full court press and started the second half on a 14-0 run with six points from Lydia Riskey, four points from Lawrence, and a basket apiece from Sundby and Brynn Stevens for a 40-18 lead five minutes into the half. Crookston’s Brooklyn scored the first Pirate points of the half with 12:24 to go, but Sacred Heart answered with a 19-2 run with eight points from Lawrence, Finley Horken had five points including two off a steal and layup, Sundby added four points and Brynn Stevens had two points for a 59-22 lead with 5:39 to go and running time started. Sacred Heart went to the bench and got everybody inn. Crookston followed suit a short-time later and Sacred Heart won the game 64-26.
Sacred Heart only made three three-pointers in the game while Lexi Lawrence had 26 points, the same amount the Pirate team scored in the game.
Crookston drops to 0-1 on the year and will be at Lake Park-Audubon on Tuesday. Sacred Heart improves to 2-0 on the year and will host Ada-Borup-West on Tuesday.
