CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRLS FINISH 1ST, BOYS FINISH 5TH AT EGF TRACK INVITE

The Crookston Pirate Girls Track team finished first out six teams with 145 points, 14 better than West Marshall, and the Pirate Boys Track team finished fifth out of five teams at the East Grand Forks Green Wave Invitational in East Grand Forks.

PIRATE GIRLS –
The Crookston Pirate Girls Track team had six first-place finishes and two second-place finishes on their way to the first-place finish. “I was really happy with the teams performance today.  To finish in first place in our first meet against some pretty good teams was nice,” said Pirate Coach Amy Boll. “The girls were so excited to get back out and competing in a meet.  It was fun to sit and watch them perform.”

Crookston was led by Emma Borowicz, who will run track at Minnesota State Mankato next year, with three first-place finishes.  Emma finished first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50 seconds even.  She also won the 200 meters with a time of 28.2 seconds and won the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet and 4 inches.  “She had a great start to her senior season.  She is a strong athlete, works extremely hard, and did very well in all of her events,” said Pirate Coach Amy Boll. “It was fun to see her compete and she looked really good in the 300 hurdles.”

Breanna Kressin picked up where she left off in 2019 with an outstanding time of 17.08 seconds in the 100 hurdles to finish first place. “She ran the hurdles well and even though it wasn’t where she wanted it to be, I thought it was a great start after not running the race for two years,” said Coach Boll. “I was really happy with how she looked out there today.”

Ally Perreault had a great start to her junior track season with a first-place finish in the shot put with a put of 30 feet.  “Ally has been working hard so far this season,” said Coach Boll. “On that particular throw, everything seemed to come together and that was one of her strongest throws she has ever had.  She performed very well.”

The last first-place finish for the Pirates was Hayden Winjum in the triple jump with a jump of 34 feet and 2 inches.  “Hayden did a really good job with her triple jump and is such a strong jumper,” said Coach Boll. “I am excited to see what she can do this year.”

PIRATE BOYS
Crookston only brought 12 boys to compete with six having to stay home for covid protocol and had four first-place finishes with Noah Kiel involved in three of them and one second-place finish on their way to a fifth-place finish.

Noah Kiel picked up where he left off in 2019 with a first-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 11.99.  Kiel also won the 200-meter race with a time of 24.22. “He had a good meet today and ran well,” said Pirate Boys Coach Wayne Folkers. “He is coming in as a senior and has been a good leader for our team so far this season, especially bringing the young kids along.  His times were solid to start the year.  They were a little slower than he expected, but it has been two years since the last track meet and I will take the times.”

Kiel was also on the first-place 4 x 200 relay team that finished first, along with Brady Wisk. Caden Boike, Easton Tangquist, and Noah Kiel. “We have four pretty fast sprinters running the relay and I am looking forward to having a pretty good 4×200 relay team this year,” said Coach Folkers.  “We have a nice mix of kids and they ran well with decent exchanges.”

Greg Gonzalez won the shot put with a put of 38 feet and 9 inches.  It was his first-ever track meet. “He has never competed before and had a great meet,” said Coach Folkers. “It is pretty crazy to think in his first-ever meet he threw over 38 feet.  That is pretty impressive and Greg was fired up with his first place finish.”

The Pirate boys had one second-place finish and that came from Karsten Isaacson in the 800 meters with 2:26.42.  “Karsten was a good workhorse for us today,” said Coach Folkers. “He competed in a variety of events and did well in all of them.  He has gotten a lot stronger and we are looking for good things from him this year.”

Everybody at the meet was excited to be back in action after a year off. “We are happy to be back after not having a season last year,” said Coach Folkers. “The kids didn’t have to wear facemasks so it was fun seeing their faces.”

Up next, Crookston will compete in the “host” the Crookston Invitational at East Grand Forks on Tuesday.
