EGF scores five third period goals to beat Crookston Girls Hockey

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team gave up five third period goals as the East Grand Forks Green Wave pulled away to win the game 7-2 at Mayville, North Dakota.

FIRST PERIOD
East Grand Forks controlled play for a portion of the first period and fired several shots on goal, but Madi Abrams was able to make the saves and the teams were scoreless through the first 17 minutes of play.

SECOND PERIOD
The second period was a more defensive period as both teams struggled to get shots on goal. Just over seven minutes into the period, EGF’s Blake Schultz got the puck and circled around the ice, along the boards and got a shot on goal. The rebound was in front of the net and Ady Hjelman slapped the puck into the net for a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Green Wave struck again as Keeley Dronen was behind the Pirate net and looked to slide a pass in front of the net, but it deflected off a skate or stick and deflected into the net for a 2-0 lead. EGF took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission.

THIRD PERIOD
All heck broke loose in the third period with the teams scoring seven goals! Crookston started the scoring right off the opening face off. Peyton Demarais had a shot from the point that went on net, the rebound was loose in front, and Jensen Stinar slapped the puck into the net to get within a 2-1 deficit. EGF didn’t take long to answer as Keeley Dronen struck again less than a minute later to give the Green Wave a 3-1 lead. Crookston answered less than a minute later as Adley Vigness took a shot from the point, and the rebound was loose in front, and Emma LaPlante knocked the puck into the net to get within a 3-2 deficit. The crazy start to the period continued as EGF answered 40 seconds later with a Keeley Janicke goal to give the Green Wave a 4-2 lead less than three minutes into the period. The frantic scoring continued as EGF’s Ady Hjelman scored her second goal of the game just over four minutes into the period for a 5-2 lead. There wasn’t any scoring for over seven minutes until Hjelman scored again to record the hat trick and give the Green Wave a 6-2 lead. The Green Wave added one more in the final two minutes of the game as Laurel Kolstoe scored with 90 seconds left in the game and East Grand Forks won the game 7-2.

Crookston drops to 4-13 on the year and 2-6 in section play and will host Champlin Park on Friday. EGF improves to 10-5-1 on the year and 2-1 in section play.
