Holy Angels Academy scores three power play goals to beat the Pirate Girl’s Hockey team

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team gave up three quick power plays to #2 ranked Holy Angels Academy 4-1 to break the Pirate’s seven-game winning streak at the Richfield Arena Friday Night.

FIRST PERIOD
The Crookston Pirates started off a little slow in the period,; with Holy Angels Academy getting the first four shots on goal to start the game, the Pirates started to think that they could possibly play with the number 2 ranked team in Class A Minnesota Girl’s Hockey!! Crookston!! Crookston would eventually get some action in the Stars zone and create chances, as Parker Strand got in close for a solid shot on goal, followed by Emma LaPlante and Addie Fee, two shots that the Stars goalie, Senior Zoe Rimstad steered aside. Crookston would get a power play opportunity early in the period and found the going tough with the man advantage. The rest of the period was a feeling-out time for both teams and showed the toughness of Crookston senior goalie Kamebelle Freije as she was solid with 10 saves while Rimstad of Holy Angels was as adept with seven saves,

SECOND PERIOD
Holy Angels had a little jump in their step to start the second period. It took only 2:45 into the period the Stars’ now leading scorer, Genevieve Nelson scored on a blistering shot. She was in the lower circle to the left of Freije and found a spot that was ripped by the Pirate goalie to make it a 1-0 lead for the Stars.. The Period was much like the first period, with the Pirates getting some great opportunities with Jocelyn Field lifting a shot off the top of the crossbar, Strand alone in front receiving a pass on her backhand and being off balance could only get a weak shot off still it did get on the net and created some problems for Rimstad. Holy Angels would score another one on a power play just over nine minutes into the period when Harper Poehling scored on a rebound off Nelson’s shot, which came just 18 seconds after the penalty. “You know we were skating with them five on five,” said Crookston head coach Reed Olson, “you just can’t give a team like that the extra advantage, as they showed what a tremendous power play they have.” Even with the only power play of the period, Crookston was only outshot 9-6 in the period and 18 to 14 through two periods. “We played well,” said Coach Olson, “we created some chances ourselves and did a pretty good job of keeping everything outside. When they did get it down low,, they knew what they were doing.”

THIRD PERIOD
Crookston skated short-handed six minutes of the 17 minute third period, and Holy Angels scored two more power-play goals. The first was at 6:25 and came 14 seconds after the Pirate’s penalty by Masyn Mullin on a rebound. The Pirates would score their own power-play goal just over nine minutes into the third period on a nice passing play down low by the Pirates when Addison Fee got the puck to LaPlante, who nudged it across the crease to the Pirate goal- scoring terror, Jocelyn Field who put in the pass quickly for her 10th goal of the year and her fifth in the last two games. “That is what we work on practice on our power play,” said Coach Olson, “nice passing play by the three girls, and Jocy certainly knows what to do with it.” Crookston would take another penalty with four minutes to go in the game, and this time, Poehling scored her second goal and second power-play goal 13 seconds after the Pirate penalty. So, the three power-play goals by Holy Angels came 18 seconds, 14 seconds, and 13 seconds after the penalties were assessed. The Stars seemed to be frustrated by the goaltending of Freije, who played outstanding AGAIN! “You can not blame Kamebell for ANY of their goals tonight,” said Coach Olson, ” she played a great game which we are accustomed. The first goal nobody could have stopped that one, and the others on the power play were all back door play, and she didn’t have a chance.” When we play teams of this calendar, we have to show more discipline and stay out of the penalty box for sure,” added Olson.

Crookston falls to 7-2 on the year and will have a quick turnaround tomorrow when they play at Prior Lake at 1:00 PM at the Dacotah Arena in Prior Lake. The game will be on KROX RADIO, starting with the pre-game show at 12:30 PM. Starting back at home on Monday, hosting East Grand Forks in a win, the Pirates will play seven straight teams that are ranked in the top 20 of the latest Minnesota High School Class A polls!!! So far, they are 2-1 against them. After Prior Lake tomorrow, the Pirates will be off for Christmas and then go to the Warroad Classic on December 26-28, playing #4 Warroad, #5 Mound-Westonka, and #11 Albert Lea.
