CROOKSTON GIRL’S TENNIS EDGES EAST GRAND FORKS

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team picked up a big 5-2 victory over the East Grand Forks Green Wave in a match played in East Grand Forks.

The match was closer than the 5-2 score might indicate with Crookston winning three of their matches in three sets with all three of the third sets won by 10-7 scores.  Crookston led 3-2 with the third singles and third doubles match still out on the court and the Pirates were able to win both matches in three sets to earn the victory. “It was pretty exciting at the end,” said Coach Brekken. “The girls finished strong and won the matches so that was pretty exciting.”
Crookston’s Hayden Winjum won her first singles match in three sets, Halle Winjum won her third singles match in three sets and the third doubles team of Halle Bruggeman and Audrey Harbott won in three sets.  “Hayden had a great win at first singles,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “She lost to the same opponent in Crookston earlier this year so that was a big win for her confidence and for the team.  Catherine Tiedemann, at second singles, and the first doubles team of Emma Borowicz and Emma Osborn won their matches pretty easily by 6-1, 6-1 scores.  “Those three really played well today and that was nice to see,” said Coach Brekken. “Overall, the girls were quick on their feet and came out ready to play and looked completely different from the match on Tuesday.  Our mental approach was better today.”
Coach Brekken was happy to see the girls bounce back with a solid team effort.
“Top to bottom it was a great effort across the board and it was nice to see a better mental approach today,” said Coach Brekken. “I hope the girls keep playing like they did today at Detroit Lakes tomorrow and Alexandria on Saturday.”

Crookston will travel to Detroit Lakes on Friday for a triangular against the Lakers and Wadena-Deer Creek.
