The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines and lost a tight 4-3 match to the undefeated Detroit Lakes Lakers in a triangular played in Detroit Lakes.
CROOKSTON VS WADENA-DEER CREEK
The Pirates cruised to a 7-0 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek in a Section 8A matchup in the first match of the day. The Pirates used a different line up with Halle Winjum winning her second singles match in straight sets, Emma Osborn won her third singles match 6-0, 5-1 and Halle Bruggeman won her fourth singles match in straight sets.
The doubles line up had a different look too with Hayden Winjum and Hannah Lindemoen winning their first doubles match 6-1, 6-1 and Emma Gunderson and Edean Haller winning their second doubles match in straight sets, and Audrey Harbott and Brekken Tull winning their third doubles match. The only match that went three sets was at first singles, where Catherine Tiedemann had a nice win over a very good opponent. Catherine won her first set 6-3 and lost the second set before winning the third set 10-6. “We tried a different kind of look and allowed some girls that don’t play Singles very often the opportunity to give it a shot and work on different parts of their games. The girls played well at all spots,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “Catherine Tiedemann’s performance against a work horse type player in Madison Parker for Wadena sticks out as it was a back and forth battle to the end. Whoever had to wind at their back was making the more errors. Catherine adjusted her game and prevailed.”

We have some things to clean up in our doubles play but we keep improving. I was also very pleased in our #2 and #3 Singles spots with 8th graders Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson securing convincing victories.”
The Pirates traveled to Alexandria Friday night and are staying overnight and will play at the Alexandria Quadrangular on Saturday and will play Detroit Lakes (again), Osakis and Alexandria.
