CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRL’S TENNIS TIES FOR SECOND IN NORTHWEST QUAD

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team, led by a first-place finish in fourth singles from Emma Osborn, tied for second place with nine points in the Northwest Quadrangular played in Thief River Falls. Thief River Falls won the tournament with 18 points including five first-place finishes from the Prowlers. East Grand Forks tied Crookston with nine points while Moorhead took fourth place with four points.

In first singles, Catherine Tiedemann won two of her three matches including wins over Katelyn Farder of East Grand Forks (6-3, 6-2) and Azylen Lunak of Moorhead (6-3, 6-2). Tiedemann was denied a first-place finish by Thief River Falls’ Bella Nelson, who defeated Tiedemann (6-2, 6-1). “She played really well today too,” explained Crookston head coach Cody Brekken. “She played the Thief River Falls number one doubles, typical, player first. She had some struggles with her, but then won against Moorhead and East Grand Forks.”

Hayden Winjum picked up one win in three difficult second singles matches. Hayden topped Kate Johnson of East Grand Forks (0-6, 7-5, 10-3). Winjum dropped a match against Nicole Hoogland of Moorhead before falling in a back-and-forth three-set match against Emma Fagerstrom of Thief River Falls (3-6, 6-7, 2-7). “Hayden beat East Grand Forks in her first round,” noted Brekken. “She lost to Thief River close and then lost her Moorhead match close. It’s that same type of tennis she’s been playing, just consistent. She probably wishes she had that Moorhead one back. It was late in the day and going back and forth quite a bit. She didn’t play her best tennis today, but she stayed positive and played through it.”

Halle Winjum took third place in third singles winning one of her three matches. Halle defeated Kendal Rand of East Grand Forks (6-1, 6-3). Winjum lost a three-set match to Nicole Hoogland of Moorhead (5-7, 6-1, 6-10), before falling in straight sets to Ava Yuska of Thief River Falls. “Halle lost a really tight one to start, and an emotional one, against Moorhead,” added Brekken. “She got back out and played against East Grand Forks and got a good, decisive victory.”

Emma Osborn provided Crookston’s lone first-place finish in fourth singles winning all three of her matches. Osborn lost just eight total games during her three matches beating Hailey Vatnsdal of East Grand Forks (6-0, 6-4), Josie Palmer of Moorhead (6-4, 6-0), and Bell Hamre of Thief River Falls (6-0, 6-0). “She played great,” said Brekken. “Even though she had some tough girls that she had to play, she stepped up her game and delivered in the tough, rainy conditions. She played really well today.”

Crookston’s top doubles pairing of Hannah Lindemoen and Eden Haller took third place with a win over Kylie Dumas and Rachel Craig of Moorhead (4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8). The Pirates number two doubles team of Emma Gunderson and Halle Bruggeman also took third place winning one match over Emma Craig and Anna Korsmo of Moorhead (4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8). Crookston’s third doubles team did not win a match in the tournament. “Thief River Falls changed it up and put some of their typical singles players in doubles,” noted Brekken. “They’re kind of the same in all ten spots on varsity so that it can get kind of frustrating playing them. They’re just a really solid team.” Crookston battled the elements throughout the day, and Brekken was pleased with his team’s overall performance, “these are really good teams. It can be a little overwhelming because they are tough games up and down the lineup. I was really satisfied with the day. The girls really played tough today. Playing three matches in a row against touch competition can drag on some people, but I never saw that today from our team. Our girls are finally starting to figure out that there is going to be ups and downs, and you’ve just got to mitigate when you’re struggling and turn it around quickly. I think our girls did that today.”

Crookston returns to the courts on Saturday when the Pirates host a triangular with Park Rapids and Roseau starting at 9 A.M.
