The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team hosted their annual Crookston Invitational today at the Crookston High School.
Due to multiple courts in town being unplayable due to overnight rainfall, as well as a late cancellation from one of the teams, eavh player within Crooskton’s lineup played four times, playing one set to eight games. Medals were awarded by number of wins, with ties being determined by games won/lost. The five teams competing are Crookston, EGF, Hibbing, New London-Spicer and Wadena-Deer Creek.
Overall, Crookston went:
Crookston beat New London-Spicer 6-1
Crookston beat Waden-Deer Creek 4-3
Hibbing beat Crookston 4-3
East Grand Forks beat Crookston 6-1
Throughout the day, which lasted a smidge over seven hours, Crookston was involved in tense one-set matches, although no Pirates took part in any tiebreaks. In first singles, Lauren Tull had a fabulous day, being the only Pirate singles player to win every match she played. After being down 4-1 in her opening match, Tull won seven of the next eight games, and proceeded to drop just eight more games the rest of the day. Another standout performance in singles was Haddie Halland, who went 3-1 on the day, getting the first varsity wins of her career. Kaylen Bedard was the other Pirate singles player to get a win, as she won against New London-Spicer in second singles.
In doubles, all four doubles pairs got at least one victory. In third doubles, Alyssa Johnson and Korynn Uttermark went 2-0 before being substituted for Katie Seaver and Tegan Fanfulik. That pair went 1-1, giving Pirate third doubles a 3-1 record. In second doubles, Ella Capistran and Sylvia Christiansen bounced back from a rough first match with fantastic serving, winning two of their next three to go 2-2. Lastly, the Groven sisters of Nora and Brigit were locked in multiple close matches, but they were only able to take the victory in one of them against New London-Spicer.
