The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team handed the Detroit Lakes Lakers their first section loss of the season in a 4-3 victory at the Bemidji Lumberjack triangular at the Bemidji High School tennis courts.
Crookston lost a hard-fought battle to the Bemidji Lumberjacks 4-3 under the lights to complete the triangular. Five of the matches were finished under the lights with the final match completed just before 8:30 p.m.
CROOKSTON VS DETROIT LAKES –
Crookston had a big win over the Detroit Lakes Lakers 4-3 in a dual in Bemidji, avenging a 4-3 loss in Detroit Lakes a week and a half ago. The win was a big one for Crookston because it handed Detroit Lakes their first section dual loss of the season and should help Crookston in seeding.
Hayden Winjum won her second singles match, Halle Winjum won the third singles match and Emma Gunderson won the fourth singles match all in straight sets. At first doubles, Catherine Tiedemann had a great battle but came up short 6-4, 6-4. “We played great in the singles matches,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “They were hitting the ball well and all of them had some competitive matches and they played well today.”
In doubles, the first doubles team of Emma Borowicz and Emma Osborn won their match 6-2, 6-4. The second doubles team of Halle Bruggeman and Hannah Lindemoen lost a close third set 10-6. “First doubles played a great match and beat a good doubles team and second doubles had a great comeback and fell a little short, but they played a good match,” said Coach Brekken. “It was a nice win for us and the second time you play somebody, that match has a little more strength when it comes to seeding, so it was a big win.”

CROOKSTON VS BEMIDJI-
Crookston took a quick 1-0 lead when Hayden Winjum won her second singles match 6-2, 6-2. Bemidji tied the match at 1-1 with a win at fourth singles. The final five matches were played under the lights on the north courts. Bemidji won the third doubles match that was completed at 7:40 p.m. with four more matches on the courts on a beautiful evening. The girls seemed to enjoy the matches under the lights and continued to battle against a very good Bemidji team.
Bemidji won the second doubles match to take a 3-1 lead, but it didn’t last long because a few minutes later, Halle Winjum won her third singles match 6-4, 6-2 to bring Crookston within a 3-2 deficit with the first singles and first doubles matches still on the court. “The Winjum sisters played well and picked up two nice wins for us,” said Coach Brekken. The two matches left ended about the same time with Bemidji winning the first singles match and Crookston’s Emma Osborn and Emma Borowicz winning a thrilling three-set match 4-6, 6-2 and 13-11. “The first doubles team trailed 9-7 in the third set and came back to win the set and match,” said Coach Brekken. “That was nice to see the girls battle back when it looked like they might not win and get the win.” Bemidji won the match 4-3, but the Pirates played some solid tennis and keep showing improvement. “Bemidji is tough from top to bottom, but the girls keep improving and played some really good tennis today,” said Coach Brekken. “I was very satisfied with how we played today and the girls keep getting better and working hard.”
