CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRLS AND BOYS TRACK TEAMS FINISH FOURTH AT TRF

The Crookston Pirate Boys and Girls track & field teams competed in the crowded field of Thief River Falls Quentin Jones Invitational at the Multi-Events Center in Thief River Falls. The Pirate girls took fourth place with 101.33 points while Thief River Falls girls team won with a score of 139. The Crookston boys finished in fourth place with 65 points while East Grand Forks won the meet with a score of 167.

GIRLS –
The Pirate Girls team was led by three first-place finishes. Katherine Geist found her usual spot on top of the podium following a run of 5:20.27 in the 1600 meters. “(Katherine) ran in the 1600 and today was a little bit windier than the other,” said Crookston girls track and field head coach Amy Boll. “She did a very, very good job with that. She’s a very strong runner, and she fought the wind and came out with a first-place finish.”
Jada Dillabough continued her strong start to the season with a throw of 34’6” in the shot put into taking the gold. “It’s nice for (Jada Dillabough) to be outside. The last meet she wasn’t able to get to, but this meet she was outside and threw, and she did very, very well.”
In the pole vault, Emma Borowicz cleared eight feet to take second place amongst nine competitors. “Emma did very well in the 300 hurdles,” added Boll. “She came out very strong. She likes the 400 and a little bit longer run. Her performance was really, really good.”
The 4×800 meter relay team of Thea Oman, Anke Weirsma, Emma Gunderson, Hayden Winjum ran to a time of 10:38.24 for first place in a crowded field. “They started our track meet with a first-place finish, and they’ve been looking strong all year,” said Boll.
Rachel Hefta ran a strong 400-meter race in 1:07.46 to claim second place while Emma Borrowicz cleared the 300-meter hurdles in 49.81 for second place as well. Hayden Winjum cleared 30’11-5” in the triple jump for second place. “Hayden Winjum is a very good athlete,” explained Boll. “This was the first time she went out and did the triple jump this year. She practiced it a little bit yesterday, and she had a very good performance today.” Winjum also took third place in the 400-meters with a time of 1:08.96. “There was a lot of good competition in all of the events,” summarized Boll. “This tested our athletes, and it’s really good to get to these meets where the kids can see the competition, maybe some of them that always get first is pushing them into just being a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more hungry to work hard in practice and get to the next level. I was very happy overall with how all the kids did today.”

BOYS –
The Pirate Boys team was led by Jaden Lubarski’s second place finish in the 800 meters to take second place with a finish in 2:11.61. “That’s his event,” explained Crookston Boys track and field head coach Wayne Folkers. “He likes it, and he works hard at it so very nice to see him run that well.”
The 4×100 meter relay team of Brady Wisk, Jacob Brunelle, Sam Overgaard, and Shaun Nelson also finished in second place with a time of 48.24 seconds. “That surprised me,” said Folkers of his relay team’s strong showing. “We haven’t worked a lot of handoffs and stuff, but yet they ran well and had some pretty good handoffs.”
Noah Kiel’s sprint of the 200 meters in 23.98 seconds was good for second place while Ty Hamre’s throw of 130’8” in the discuss placed him in third. “(Noah Kiel) had kind of a slow start, but that’s ok,” noted Folkers. “He finished with a good time.” The 4×200 relay team of Brady Wisk, Jacob Brunelle, Sam Overgaard, and Noah Kiel finished with a time of 1:39.68 to take third place in the event. “The 4×200, that looked strong,” said Folkers. “I like my relays, and they’re coming along great. We’re getting better, and that’s all I could ever ask of them. I’m happy with the showing.”

The Pirate Track & Field teams return to action on Friday when they compete in the East Grand Forks Invitational beginning at 4:00 p.m. at East Grand Forks Senior High School track.
