CROOKSTON PIRATE VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY A BALANCED RED LAKE COUNTY CENTRAL

The Red Lake County Mustangs used a balanced attack to beat the Crookston Pirate Volleyball team 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21) in a Section 8A match played in the Crookston High School gymnasium.

SET ONE –
Crookston scored the first point of the match with a Jasmin Hanson kill, and the teams would battle back and forth for ties at 1, 2, and 4 before Red Lake County Central rattled off three straight points for a 7-4 lead.  Red Lake County Central kept their lead around two points and led 16-14 when they started to catch fire.  The Mustangs had a kill from Calyssa Eskeli and an ace from Cari Bachand to spark a 9-1 run. Red Lake County Central ended the set with three aces and a kill for the 25-15 victory.  “We were kind of like a rollercoaster,” said Pirate Coach Ashley Stopa. “We need to be a lot louder and communicate better.  We were a little timid, and that hurt us too.”

SET TWO –
Red Lake County Central came out strong with two points, including an ace for a 2-0 lead.  The teams were tied at 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10 before the Mustangs slowly pulled away behind some kills from Jenna Pahlen and Cari Bachand on their way to a 19-13 lead.  Crookston battled back with a point off a bad Mustang serve, followed by back-to-back Jasmin Hanson aces to bring the Pirates within a three-point deficit (19-16).  Red Lake County Central ended the set on a 6-0 run behind a Jenna Pahlen kill, followed by four Crookston errors and the game ended with a Cari Bachand kill for a 25-16 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.  “One error seems to go to two, to three, to four,” said Coach Stopa. “We can’t be timid and have to have more confidence.”

SET THREE –
Red Lake County Central started the set by scoring the first four points before Crookston got their first point on a Mustang passing error.  That point sparked a little run by Crookston, including three straight aces from Kasey Cwikla to tie the set at 5-5.  The teams were tied at 6 and 7 before Red Lake County Central went on a 7-0 run behind a Pahlen block, two Sidney Olson kills, and a Cari Bachand kill for a 14-7 lead.  It looked like Red Lake County Central was going to pull away for a comfortable victory, but Crookston slowly climbed back within striking distance after a kill from Jasmin Hanson, a Libby Salentine ace and another Kasey Cwikla ace to get within a 19-17 deficit.  The teams battled back and forth and after an Emma Boll kill Crookston trailed 23-21 with the serve, but the Pirates hit into the net, and the Mustangs won the match with a service ace from Cari Bachand for a 25-21 victory to win the match 3-0.  “We served a little better today, so that was good to see.  We had some decent attacks, but we hit them right at the other team, so we have to work on that.  Dani Boyle was all over the place and did a great job for us in the back row,” said Coach Stopa. “We had some miscommunication, and Red Lake County Central had a nice balanced attack that hurt us.  I thought we had amazing hustle, and we have to find a way to terminate the ball.”

Crookston drops to 1-7 on the year and will host the Crookston Invitational on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.   Red Lake County Central improves to 7-7 on the year.
