CROOKSTON PIRATE VOLLEYBALL DROPS REGULAR SEASON FINALE TO ROSEAU

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team traveled to Roseau on Tuesday night to battle the Roseau Rams in a matchup of Section 8AA teams. It was also the regular season finale for both teams. Roseau showed why they are one of the best teams in Section 8AA, and the team to beat in the North, winning the match in three sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-10).

First Set
The Pirates came out and got the opening point in the set, but the Rams quickly showed why they are one of the teams to beat in Section 8AA. Roseau would counter with an 8-0 run thanks to some Crookston mistakes, take an early 8-1 lead, and force a Pirates timeout. Roseau would score two more points before Crookston finally put an end to the run and the Pirates would start to settle in. Unfortunately for Crookston, the early deficit was too much to overcome, and Roseau held a comfortable lead the rest of the way, taking an early lead in the match with a 25-14 victory. Crookston did have some bright spots in the first set with strong play from Mackenzie Funk and an ace from Joey Nesseth.

Second Set
Roseau got off to a hot start in the second set as well, starting with a 6-1 lead thanks to strong hitting. Roseau continued to play well and built the lead up to 10-3 before back-to-back kills by Libby Salentine and Destiny Goulet-Ramirez gave Crookston some momentum. The Pirates would score for straight, and after a couple of Roseau points, Crookston would score four more points thanks to two more kills from Destiny Goulet-Ramirez, and the Rams held a slight lead at 13-11. Roseau quickly took the momentum back with a 5-1 run and forced a Pirates timeout with an 18-12 lead. The Pirates never got closer, and Roseau would score the last six points of the set to win it 25-14 and have a chance to win the match in the third set. Roseau’s biggest strength through the opening two sets was the play of their hitters up front.

Third Set
As they did in the first two sets, Roseau continued their dominance and started with a 7-1 lead that ballooned up to 11-3 before Crookston took a timeout to talk things over. The Pirates played even with the Rams for a little bit after that, but Roseau was too much for Crookston and would score eleven of the last fifteen points to win the set 25-10 and the match in three sets.

Crookston finishes the regular season with a record of 2-21 and will find out their seed for the Section 8AA Tournament later this week. The Pirates will more than likely be traveling to Thief River Falls to take on the Prowlers in the opening round. Roseau finishes the regular season with a final record of 12-11.
