The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team could not keep up with the high-octane offense of the Ada-Borup West Cougars on Monday night, as they were held to under 10 points in each set en route to a 25-9, 25-5, 25-9 loss.
FIRST SET
Crookston scored the first point of the match, but the Cougars then surged forward to take a 4-1 lead, and the run got up to 6-1 before the Pirates were able to score again. From there, it seemed like Crookston would score 1 point every 3 Cougar points. Abi Bruley dumped one in two to cut the lead to 9-3, but the Cougars responded with the first of their many long runs in this match, as they went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-3 lead, before a service error made it 15-4. Both teams alternated points until it was 18-7, before the Cougars scored 7 of the final 9 points in the set to win the set by a score of 25-9.
SECOND SET
Crookston looked to get off to a better start, and Brynna Kopecky got a kill to tie the set at 1. However, ABW took off from there, and went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-1 lead. After a serve into the net made it 8-2, ABW chose to outdo themselves, as Ellidi Dahl led the way for the Cougars as they went on a 10-0 run to make it 18-2. The Pirates were then able to score 3 of the next 4 points, including kills by Kopecky and Madi Abrams to cut the lead down to 19-5, but the Cougars followed that up by scoring the final 6 points of the set, ending the dominant show in a 25-5 victory, allowing them to go up 2 sets to none.
THIRD SET
The third set, unfortunately, went about the same way as the first two sets. The Cougars took off to a 5-2 start, with both points coming off of ABW errors, and then the set turned on its head from there, as the Cougars went on a 12-0 run to blow the lead open, at a 17-2 advantage before another service error ended the run. A Lana Peterson kill and an Abi Bruley block was part of a 4-0 Crookston run that ended with a Brynna Kopecky ace. However, that ended abruptly, as the Cougars repeated set 1, scoring 7 of the final 9 points to win the third set 25-9, winning the match 3 sets to none.
Crookston drops to 0-5 on the year and will take on Thief River Falls tomorrow night. ABW improves to 7-2 on the year.
