The Crookston Pirate Wrestlers won their fifth dual of the season when they beat the Hillsboro-Central Valley Burros 54-27 in a match that took less than an hour in Hillsboro. “I thought our guys wrestled well tonight,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson.
The match started at 152-pounds and Hillsboro-Central Valley picked up a 7-4 win to take an early 3-0 lead. Crookston won the next four matches with Spencer Ness coming out strong at 160-pounds for a pin in 47 seconds for a 6-3 lead. “Having him back in the lineup was nice,” said Coach Hanson. “He was dominating and got the pin.” Layten Fuentes wrestled a solid match and won by a pin in the third period at 4:55 for a 12-3 lead. “Layten coming away with a hard-fought vitory as he wore down his opponent and got the win,” said Coach Hanson. “Those pins were huge for us. Those guys getting back-to-back pins got us the lead for good.” Hunter Knutson and Ethan Boll won by forfeits for and after a loss by pin at 220-pounds, Jesse Sanchez won his first varsity match by a forfeit to give the Pirates a 24-3 lead. “Jesse is improving each week and nice to see him get the first official varsity win,” said Coach Hanson. “He had a big J.V. win earlier and now he is rolling.”
The next match was the top of the lineup with Evin Trudeau coming out strong and won by a pin in 36-seconds. “It was an impressive performance by Evin,” said Coach Hanson. After the Pirates lost the 113-pound match by forfeit, Gavyn Hlucny won his match by a pin in 30-seconds for a 36-9 lead with four matches left. “He was on a mission and picked up the pin early and that was nice to see,” said Coach Hanson. Carter Coauette won the 138-match by forfeit and the match ended with Ethan Bowman wrestling a solid match before he got stuck in the second period and was pinned, but Crookston won the match 54-27. “I think we took a lot of good things away from the Pequot Lakes and Rumble on the Red tournaments,” said Coach Hanson. “We are working on getting better so we are ready to compete at Sections.”
