CROOKSTON PIRATES BOYS HOCKEY WINS IN OVERTIME OVER RED LAKE FALLS

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team won in overtime against the Red Lake Falls Eagles, 5-4, at Cardin-Hunt Arena in Red Lake Falls. 

FIRST PERIOD
In the first, it was a very back-and-forth start again, as neither team could get many shots off at the beginning of the period. Crookston’s Garrett Fischer had a breakaway opportunity but was denied by the Eagles, which kept the game scoreless. Red Lake Falls scored first as Keegan Schmitz fired his shot into the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Crookston answered as Garrett Fischer snapped his shot into the back of the net to tie the game at one. Crookston would head to the power play as the Eagles were called for a penalty, but Red Lake Falls killed it to stay at one apiece. Red Lake Falls would recapture the lead as Gavin Girdler buried his shot into the net to make it 2-1. Red Lake Falls held their 2-1 lead going into the second period. 

SECOND PERIOD
In the second, Crookston would head to the power play just half a minute into the period. Red Lake Falls would kill it off and keep their 2-1 lead. Later in the period, Blake Breiland scored for Red Lake Falls to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. A few minutes after that, Kegan Schmitz scored his second goal of the night to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead, which prompted Crookston to call their timeout. Tate Hamre for Crookston would score as he found the puck in front of the net in a scramble to make it 4-2 with Red Lake Falls still on top. Crookston went back to the power play, but Red Lake Falls was able to kill it. Red Lake Falls went to the power play toward the end of the period. As time expired, Red Lake Falls held a 4-2 lead. 

THIRD PERIOD
At the beginning of the third, Red Lake Falls had 40 seconds of power play time, but Crookston killed it off. Red Lake Falls went back to the power play, but Crookston once again killed off the man advantage for the Eagles. Crookston headed to the power play a few minutes later as Red Lake Falls was called for a penalty, but Red Lake Falls killed it off. Later in the period, Greyson Ecker scored for Crookston to pull the Pirates within one at 4-3. Then, Kadin Edwards scored for Crookston as he tied the game at four with just under five minutes left in the game. The teams would remain tied as they headed for overtime. 

Overtime
In overtime, Red Lake Falls dominated the first part of the extra period as their offense was able to get multiple shots off, but Parker Kelly was able to keep the game going. Later in overtime, Edwards had an opportunity to win the game, but his shot hit the post and kept the game tied at four. Then, Garrett Fischer took a pass from Teagen Lubinski, walked into the offensive zone, and fired a shot that found the back of the net to give Crookston the overtime victory. 

Crookston improves to 15-10-0 and will wait to see who they play in the postseason. Red Lake Falls drops to 18-5-1 and will play Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday before beginning postseason play.
