Crookston School Board swears-in 3 board members, hires a 2nd grade teacher

The Crookston School Board held a special meeting on Monday evening in the Crookston High School Choir/Orchestra room.
The first item was to swear in board members Mike Theis, Jaclyn Martin, and Lori Capistran after they won the November election. After the swearing-in, they reviewed Policy 209, the Code of Ethics for board members.

The board elected officers
. The board chair will be Tim Dufault. The Clerk will be Mike Theis. The Treasurer will be Lori Capistran.Tim has some big shoes to fill, and we are excited to have him as board chair,” said Superintendent Randy Bergquist. “We have two new board members and six total, and we are excited about this board.”

The Main Agenda included the approval of Fischer Rust Law Firm, PLLC of Crookston and Ratwik, Roszak and Maloney, PA as official law firms. The board designated KROX Radio and the Crookston Times as official media outlets, and they set the 2025 School Board meeting dates on the fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. with two exceptions. The May meeting would fall on Memorial Day, so they will move it to May 19. The December meeting will be held Monday, December 15, at 6:00 p.m. due to the Truth in Taxation hearing.

The board will figure out what committees they want to serve on and will be finalized at the meeting at the end of January.

They discussed preparations for Superintendent Randy Bergquist’s mid-year evaluation to be reviewed at the January 27 board meeting. They will likely have a closed meeting at the end of the meeting to discuss the evaluation before opening the meeting to give a recap of the evaluation.

The final item was the approval of employment with Hansja Braam as a second-grade teacher. Braam has seven years of experience and is a Southwest Minnesota State University graduate in Marshall, Minnesota. Braam’s first official day will be January 15. Braam will be shadowing the current teacher, Amanda Wolf starting the end of the week. “I feel bad for the students and parents for having a new teacher,” said Superintendent Randy Bergquist. “We have a teacher coming in with almost 10 years of experience so we are excited about that.”

The next School board meeting will be on Monday, January 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Crookston High School Choir/Orchestra room.
