Teachers and staff from the Crookston Public Schools had an end-of-year luncheon on Monday afternoon at Highland School. The luncheon gives staff a chance to reflect on the school year while also honoring service award winners and the recent retirees from the district.

Retirees from the Crookston School District honored this year include bus drivers Cindy and Dave Tyler, Highland head cook Anita Brekken, Highland assistant cook Wanda Proulx, Crookston High kitchen helper Mark Ecklund, and Crookston High math teacher Wayne Folkers, who retired last summer but was invited to the picnic to be honored with this year’s retirees.
Most of the district’s staff was in attendance thanks to the event organizers’ planning, who moved this year’s luncheon from Crookston High to Highland due to a staff workshop at Highland.
“Luncheon is terrific. We had some great people putting it together, and they do this as a tradition every year,” said interim superintendent Randy Bruer. ”It was at Highland this year versus the high school, but we had staffing and some workshops going on or staff development with our math series. It was good just to move here for one year and give them the benefit of the doubt.”
In a school year with so much change, from the closure of Washington School to the hiring of a new superintendent, staff enjoyed the chance to reflect ahead of the summer break before returning to school in the fall.
“It’s been a good year,” said Bruer. “We had a lot of things that were going on that we had to deal with this year, as myself as the interim superintendent, but I believe the next guy that’s coming in, who’s Todd Selk, is here also, just to kind of visit with staff, and I think we’ve got a good person coming on staff to assist Crookston in the future.”
