THIEF RIVER FALLS COASTS TO A SWEEP OVER CROOKSTON VOLLEYBALL

The Thief River Falls Prowlers were looking for their first win of the year, and after a slow start in the first set, they dominated the rest of the way in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-9) victory over the Crookston Pirate Volleyball team in a match played in Crookston.

SET ONE –
Crookston had a great start to the match and took a 4-1 lead after a few Prowler errors and an Emily Funk Kill.  “We started a lot stronger this time,” said Pirate Coach Ashley Stopa. “That was nice to see.”  Crookston led 5-3 when Thief River Falls went on a 10-0 run sparked by two service aces from Kylie Alby and back-to-back-to-back kills from Haylie Rogalla, Mattea Erickson, and Brylee Lingen for a 13-5 lead.  “She (Kylie Alby) kept moving us around, and we got a little timid,” said Coach Stopa. Thief River Falls built a 17-7 lead and led by that margin the rest of the way for a 25-14 victory. “We made a lot of errors, and it came down to a lack of communication.”

SET TWO –
Crookston had another good start in the second set with two Libby Salentine kills, but the Prowlers answered with two straight points.  The teams were tied at 3, 4, and 5 before Thief River Falls went on a 5-0 run behind Crookston errors and an Erickson kill for a 10-5 lead.  Crookston trailed 14-8 when Mallorie Sundeen had a kill, but the ensuing Pirate serve went into the net, and a few points later the Prowlers had back-to-back aces from Josie Johnson to lead 18-9.  “Mallory had a nice match for us tonight and played well,” said Coach Stopa. “We have some pretty good passers back there, but we are struggling to put it away.”   Thief River Falls cruised the rest of the way for a 25-10 victory.

SET THREE –
The set was tied at one when Crookston had five straight errors, and Thief River Falls took a 6-1 lead.  “We had a lot of miscommunication,” said Coach Stopa. “It is all of our issue because everybody on the floor and the bench needs to be talking.” Crookston battled back, and after a Hannah Loraas kill, they trailed 7-3, but Thief River Falls went on an 11-0 run to take an 18-3 lead.  The Prowlers coasted the rest of the way for a 25-9 victory to win the match 3-0.  “We are struggling with our consistency,” said Coach Stopa. “If we would have worked together a little better tonight, we could have had a closer match.  Now we have some practice time to get ready for our next match, and we will have to reset before Red Lake County Central.”

Crookston drops to 0-6 on the year and will travel to Red Lake County Central on Thursday, October 29.  Thief River Falls improves to 1-3 on the year.
