The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team had six open weights and the Fosston/Bagley Brawlers cruised to a 58-18 victory in a Section 8A dual at the Fosston High School gymnasium.
The first three matches were won by forfeit, as Fosston/Bagley won the 107 and 121 matches, while Crookston won the 114 match. The Brawlers led 12-6 without any wrestling.
The first match that was wrestled was at 127 pounds, as Kiptyn Thompson won by a pin in the second period. Thompson started the match with a takedown and added four near-fall points. After a quick takedown in the second period, Thompson won by a pin at 2:51 to give the Brawlers an 18-6 lead.
Crookston was open at the next three weights, so Fosston/Bagley built a 36-6 lead. The wrestling resumed at 152 pounds when Crookston’s Gavyn Hlucny won by a pin in the second period. Hlucny started with a takedown before he added four near-fall points for a 7-0 lead. Hlucny started the second period with a takedown and got the pin at 2:41 to bring the Pirates within a 36-12 deficit.
The only match to go the full six minutes was at 160 pounds when Fosston/Bagley’s Domanick Thompson beat Jose Arriaga 11-2. There was no scoring in the first period, but Thompson started the second period down and scored the first point on an escape before getting a takedown for a 4-0 lead. Arriaga answered with an escape, and Thompson took a 4-1 lead into the third period. Arriaga started the final period down and scored on an escape to get within a 4-2 deficit. A short time later, Thompson countered with a takedown and four more near-fall points as he pulled away to win the match 11-2.
At 172 pounds, Fosston/Bagley’s Gunner Nolan was taken down before getting an escape and trailed 3-1 after the first period. Nolan started down and got an escape at the beginning of the second period. He followed with a takedown and got the win by pin at 2:39.
Crookston’s Miles Corniellie picked up the third and final Pirate win at 189 pounds when he got a takedown and won by pin in 61 seconds.
The 215 pound match only took 29 seconds as Fosston/Bagley’s Parker Nelson got a takedown and pin to win the match. Crookston was open at heavyweight and Fosston/Bagley won the match 58-18.
Crookston drops to 1-8 in duals and will be at the Thief River Falls Invitational on Saturday at the Ralph Englestad Arena.
