CROOKSTON’S ETHAN BOLL IS STATE CHAMPION, HLUCNY FINISHES 6TH AT STATE WRESTLING

Ethan Boll, a junior, became the third ever Crookston Pirate Wrestler to win a state championship and Gavyn Hlucny, an eighth-grader, finished sixth place at the Minnesota State High School League State Class A Wrestling Tournament at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul.

ETHAN BOLL –
In the semi-finals, Ethan took on Jaxon Behm of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. Ethan scored a takedown nine seconds into the match for a 2-0 lead. Behm was called for stalling with 41 seconds left and Boll led 2-0 after one period. In the second period, Boll started down and got a reversal five seconds into the period for a 4-0 lead. 33 seconds later he added three nearfall points for a commanding 7-0 lead.  Behm scored his first point with 25 seconds left when he escaped and Boll took a 7-1 lead at the end of the second period. In the third period, Boll started on the bottom again and he scored two more points on a reversal before allowing Behm to escape. 14 seconds later, Boll got another takedown and won by a pin at 4:28 to advance to the State Championship match at 220 pounds.

Boll will wrestle Gideon Ervasti of Bertha-Hewitt.  The senior is 24-1 on the year while Boll, a junior, is 46-1 on the year.  Boll, like he did all year, came out strong.  There was a lot of hand fighting, and neither wrestler made a big move until Boll shot and got a takedown for a 2-0 lead with 28 seconds left in the first period.  Ervasti countered with an escape and Boll took a 2-1. Boll started the second period on the bottom and scored an escape six seconds into the period.  He followed with a takedown 16 seconds later for a 5-1 lead.  Ervasti scored a point on an escape seven seconds later.  Boll continued to control the match and scored two more points with a takedown halfway through the period.  Ervasti got an escape and Boll took a 7-3 lead into the final two minutes.  Ervasti started the third period on the bottom and got an escape in six seconds to get within a 7-4.  The two battled and nothing happened for over a minute until Boll scored another takedown for a 9-4 lead with 49 seconds left in the match.  Ervasti answered with an escape two seconds later to get within a 9-5 deficit, but Boll was able to hang on to be the first Pirate State Wrestling Champion since Lenny Meine who won the state title in 1989 and 1990.  Paul Kuznik is the only other Pirate wrestler to win a state title when he did it in 1985 and 1986.

GAVYN HLUCNY –
In the wrestleback quarterfinals on Saturday morning, Gavyn took on Peyton Gillund of Minneota.  Gavyn had a good start to the match with a takedown 16 seconds into the period for a 2-0 lead, which he took into the second period. There was no scoring in the second period and with 49 seconds left in the third period, the match was tied at two after Gillund was awarded two nearfall points. With five seconds left in the match, Gavyn scored two points on a reversal and added three nearfall points to win the match in an exciting fashion by a 7-2 score to assure himself of a medal.
In the consolation semi-finals, Gavyn will wrestle Masyn Patrick of Holdingford. Patrick is also an eighth-grader and is 36-9 on the year. Gavyn was taken down and trailed 2-0 halfway through the first period.  25 seconds into the second period, Gavyn was taken down again and he trailed 4-0 and that is how the match would end.  With the loss, Gavyn will wrestle in the fifth-place match.

In the fifth-place match, Gavyn wrestled Teagyn Ludwig of Eden Valley-Watkins. Ludwig struck first with a takedown with 1:17 left in the first period.  Gavyn tied the match at two when he had a takedown 26 seconds into the second period.  Ludwig regained the lead with a reversal 30 seconds later for a 4-2 going into the final period.  In the third, Ludwig started on the bottom and scored a point on an escape before Hlucny countered with a takedown to get within a 5-4 deficit with 46 seconds left in the match.  Ludwig sealed the victory with a reversal with 19 seconds remaining and held on for a 7-5 victory.
Hlucny finished sixth place in his first state tournament appearance and finishes the season with a 38-16 record.
