DETROIT LAKES COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT PIRATE BOYS HOCKEY

The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team led the Detroit Lakes Lakers 2-1 heading into the third period, but the Lakers scored three goals in the third period, including a penalty shot for a 4-2 Section 8A victory at the Crookston Sports Center.

1st Period-
The Pirates opened the first period with the night’s first power play when Detroit Lakes’ Will Green was sent off for roughing with 11:41 left in the period.  The Pirates would take the lead 21 seconds later with a power-play goal by Joey Doda, his seventh of the year.  Brock Heppner drove the net and got shoved down into the goaltender, and Doda swooped in to bury the rebound and give the Pirates a 1-0 lead that they carried into the intermission.  “We were talking about how we wanted to get to the net hard all night,” said coach Josh Hardy.  “Brock drove the net and Joey was able to bang the rebound home.” Each side was whistled for three penalties in the first period.  Crookston went 1-for-2 with the man advantage, Detroit Lakes was 0-for-2.

2nd Period-
Detroit Lakes went shorthanded again to open the second period when Will Green was sent to the box for kneeing with 15:03 to play.  The Lakers killed off the Pirate power play and tied the game less than two minutes later when Jackson Carlblom beat Pirate goaltender Jack Ricord off the faceoff to tie the game 1-1 with 11:24 to go in the second. “They made a nice play off the draw to the wall,” said Hardy.  “The winger walked in front, and no one picked it up, so he was able to bury it.” The Pirates would reclaim the lead with their second power-play goal of the night.  Eric Delorme came into the zone, and defenseman Ty Hamre and Noah Kiel went in on the forecheck while the rest of Delorme’s line changed.  Delorme got a puck on net, and the rebound went into the left corner where Kiel picked it up and shoveled it out in front of the net.  Ty Hamre was there to backhand the puck past the Lakers netminder for his second goal of the season giving the Pirates a 2 to 1 lead 2:34 to go in the period.  “It was a great individual effort by Delorme going end to end,” said Hardy.  “Ty Hamre was there to bang it home in front like we’ve drawn it up.” The Pirates went 1-for-4 in the period on the power play, Detroit Lakes was 0-for-1.

3rd Period-
The Pirates went shorthanded early in the third period when Jacob Anderson was called for tripping with 15:26 to go and the Pirates were unable to kill off the fourth Laker power play of the night. The Lakers’ Braeden Wimmer picked up the puck in his end and sent out a pass down the left side for Alex Bren who skated in from the red line and ripped a shot over Ricord’s shoulder to tie the game 2-2 with 14:10 to play.  Just over a minute later the Lakers were again pressing the accelerator, and Ty Hamre was whistled for a tripping call that took away a scoring opportunity and Detroit Lakes was awarded a penalty shot.  Trey Seebold skated straight in on Ricord and beat him between the right pad and the glove for the game-winning goal giving Detroit Lakes a 3-2 lead. “We put ourselves in the situation where a guy stepped up and missed the puck creating a 3-on-1,” said Hardy.  “Hamre coming back made a play to take away a scoring opportunity, and they have to have possession of the puck before you take the play away and they called the penalty shot.” Detroit Lakes would extend their lead with a goal with 5:13 to play on a nearly identical play to the way they tied the game.  Wimmer again picked up the puck in his end and ripped a pass up ice for Bren who skated in down the left side and beat Ricord for his second of the night giving Detroit Lakes a 4-2.  The Pirates pulled Ricord for the extra skater with two minutes to play but were unable to draw any closer.  “In between the second and third players we were happy with the way we played, and we had them frustrated,” said Hardy.  “We’ve been in this situation a few times now, and it’s plain to see we beat ourselves when a goal here or there doesn’t go our way, and we change the way we play mentally.  We revert back to bad habits and a good team like Detroit Lakes will make you pay.”

The Pirates finished the night 2-for-7 on the power play, the Lakers were 1-for-4.  The game featured 14 penalties and one penalty shot.
The Pirates fall to 2-9-1 and will be back in action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Fergus Falls in a game that can be heard on KROX, with the RiverView Health Pregame Show at 12:30 p.m. Detroit Lakes improves to 9-0-1.
