The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team dropped the third-place game at the Holiday Classic in Fergus Falls to Detroit Lakes 53-27.
Detroit Lakes would get off to a quick start, getting an early three-pointer from Ella Okeson to give the Lakers a 5-0 lead. Naomi Johnson would answer with a basket underneath for the Pirates first points of the game. Okeson would strike again from the outside as her second three of the game gave the Lakers a 12-2 lead. Okeson would lead all scorers in the first half with 10 points. Katelyn Christensen would respond with a three of her own as the Pirates would trail 14-5 with about eight minutes left in the half. Christensen would set up from beyond the arc again, but this time used the glass to sink the triple, as Crookston would trail 16-8 with six minutes left in the first half. Detroit Lakes would add to their lead, but before the halftime buzzer, Chloe Boll would follow up on a putback and get the basket to fall with about 10 seconds left in the half. Detroit Lakes would lead at the half 27-12.
SECOND HALF –
Starting the second half, Naomi Johnson banked in a shot to cut Detroit Lakes’ lead down to 27-14. Johnson again would make another basket as Crookston had a three blocked, which fell right into Johnson’s hands as she spun and made another short-ranged shot. Ella Okeson would intercept a Crookston pass a little later, take it the other way, and lay it in to make it 31-16 Detroit Lakes. With just under 10 minutes left in the game, Naomi Johnson again went to work in the paint, drawing contact on the shot as she would get her basket to fall. Johnson wouldn’t convert the free throw, but it would make the game 38-22. Grace Boll would fire a three right after that as Detroit Lakes saw their lead shrink to 38-25, which forced the Lakers to call a timeout. The Lakers would respond out of the time-out, and later in the half, Karlee Mace would get a lay-up right before the shot clock expired to give Detroit Lakes a 46-25 lead with about four minutes left. Madilyn Bruggeman got a basket in the lane over a Lakers defender, but that wasn’t enough for the Pirates, as Detroit Lakes would win the third-place game, 53-27.
Naomi Johnson would get named to the all-tournament team with her 8-point performance yesterday, followed by 12 points today.
Crookston drops to 2-6 on the year and will face Perham on Tuesday on KROX.
Detroit Lakes improves to 4-4 on the year and will take on St. Cloud at home on Tuesday.
