Detroit Lakes Shuts Out Pirate Girls Soccer

The Crookston Pirates Girls’ Soccer team was held scoreless in a 7-0 loss to Detroit Lakes in a Section 8A match played at the Rotary Soccer Park in Detroit Lakes.
The Lakers dominated possession and scoring chances from the start of the match converting 23 shots on goal into seven goals throughout the night. In the tenth minute, Madilyn Kirchner took a pass from Emily Larson before striking the back of the net with a shot to give Detroit Lakes a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the Lakers added a second goal when Sydney Brininger scored doubling the hosts lead. Detroit Lakes third goal came in the 30th minute when Madilyn Brininger scored to push the DL lead to 3-0. One minute later, Karrigan Hallisey scored the Lakers fourth goal before Ava Steinmentz added a fifth goal before half-time striking a free-kick past the Crookston goalkeeper to give the Lakers a 5-0 halftime lead. “We didn’t mark the backside well,” explained Crookston head coach Sarah Reese of the first-half scoring.
The Pirates rallied for a much stronger second half. Detroit Lakes managed just two second-half goals with Abigail Larson scoring in the 53rd minute and Anna Jones tallying the final goal of the match in the 60th minute to close out the 7-0 Lakers victory. “We kept our spacing better in the second half,” noted Reese. “We played much better passing white to white, with good ball movement and ball pressure.” Despite the disappointing final scoreline, Reese was impressed with several Pirate’s performances. “Hannah (Emanuel) was busy in the back at sweeper saving us several times. Dillynn (Wallace) played well in the backfield and kept the ball moving. (Hailey) Spivey provided great passing in the midfield. Anke Wiersma played great last night (in a JV game) in Pelican Rapids and came off the bench and played outside midfielder for us.”
The Pirates fall to 0-8-1 this season and return to the field on Thursday when Crookston hosts West Ottertail Central at 4 p.m.  Detroit Lakes improves to 5-1-2.
