EAST GRAND FORKS CRUISES TO WINS OVER PIRATE BASEBALL

The East Grand Forks Green Wave continued to roll as they swept the Crookston Pirate Baseball team 18-2 in five innings and 9-3 in a Section 8AA doubleheader played at Stauss Park in East Grand Forks.

GAME ONE-
East Grand Forks scored early and often in the 18-2, five-inning victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Green Wave started the bottom of the first inning with a Carter Beck double, a Colton Dauksavage walk and a Jake Hjelle single to score the first run of the game.  After an out, Holm doubled in two more runs and East Grand Forks led 3-0 after the first inning.
East Grand Forks added four runs in the bottom of the second inning taking advantage of a double, two singles, a hit batter, and a walk to take a 7-0 lead through two innings.
The Green Wave broke the game open in the third inning when they batted 14, eight of the nine batters in the lineup scored a run behind six hits and a couple of errors for a 15-0 lead.
Crookston finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Gavin Salem doubled and came into score on a Walker Winjum ground out.   East Grand Forks responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk, double and a couple of singles to take an 18-1 lead.
Crookston needed to score at least eight runs to keep the game going and they started the fifth inning with a Joe Doda single and he scored on a Jacob Miller double.  That is all Crookston would get and East Grand Forks won the game 18-2 in five innings.  “The big difference in the first game was East Grand Forks’ energy. They wanted to win and had the energy while it looked like we were going through the motions.  It showed defensively, but we did some good things pitching and on the offensive side of the game.”

GAME TWO
The Green Wave led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and that set the tone for the rest of the inning.  The next batter reached on an error and a run scored, followed by a single.  The next batter struck out for the first out of the inning.  The next batter walked before the second strikeout of the inning.  With two outs, the Green Wave drew a walk to score a run and reload the bases, which was followed by a double for a 5-0 lead.
East Grand Forks added another run in the bottom of the second inning when the leadoff batter, Carter Beck, reached on another Pirate error and later scored on a groundout for a 6-0 lead.
The Green Wave started the bottom of the third inning by drawing a walk, which forced a Pirate pitching change.  The next East Grand Forks batter singled and the Pirate left fielder misplayed the ground ball to allow another run to score.  The leadoff batter, Beck, hit a groundball to third base and was retired, but he knocked in a run for an 8-0 lead.  Colton Dauksavage singled and later scored on a Jake Hjelle double and East Grand Forks led 9-0.
Crookston tried to mount a late rally and Gunner Gunderson singled to lead off the inning.  After a ground out, Jacob Miller singled and both baserunners scored on Joe Doda triple to bring Crookston within a 9-2 deficit.  Doda scored on a Brady Butt double, his third hit of the game, and Crookston trailed 9-3.  Crookston couldn’t find another hit and East Grand Forks held on for a 9-3 victory.  “I was proud of how we fought in the second game and played all seven innings when we were down 9-0 early,” said Coach Bakken. “Joe Doda came in and threw great and our defense was solid behind him.”

Crookston drops to 3-9 on the year and will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday when they host Thief River Falls on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.  East Grand Forks improves to 16-4 on the year and will be the top seed in the Section 8AA north sub-section.
