EAST GRAND FORKS LOSES TO DGF AFTER CONTROVERSIAL NO CALL IN SECTION 8AAA TITLE

The East Grand Forks Green Wave football team’s comeback fell short on a failed two-point conversion with eight seconds left in the game, and the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels won the Section 8AAA Championship 7-6 on Thursday night at the Fargodome.  The two-point conversion play can be seen at the end of the video below.

1st Quarter –
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would start the game on their own 13-yard line. Jordan Summers would get the handoff to the right side for a gain of 4 yards setting up second and six. Quarterback Owen Leach would drop back and find Bodey Devries for a 15-yard reception down to the 32-yard line. Summers would get the ball again, this time, for a gain of two, making it second and eight. The Rebels would go back to Summers, gaining another 2two yards for a big third and six from their own 36-yard line. Brody Friend would get his first carry on the play and would be stopped short three yards from the first down, forcing the Rebels to punt. East Grand Forks’ Cooper Smith would try and catch a short punt, laying out but not being able to corral the ball.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would recover the muffed punt on the Green Wave’s 47-yard line. Summers would get the ball for a short gain of two yards, making it 2nd and eight. Leach would go back to pass, but with the pocket crumbling around him, he would be sacked by Cole Bies to make it third and long with 7:30 left in the quarter. Leach would step up in another collapsing pocket and get sacked again, this time by Samuel Schumacher. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton could not take advantage of the turnover and would be forced to punt once again. Smith would caught the punt, and East Grand Forks would start their first drive of the game on their 31-yard line. A quarterback sneak from Drew Carpenter would go for two yards. A toss to John Anderson to the right side would get a gain of four yards, making it third and four. The Rebels would sniff out a Schmiedeberg sweep for a loss of one yard. The Green Wave would punt with 4:30 left in the quarter, and Summers would fair catch the punt at his 22-yard line. Summers would get the ball again with a run of two yards to the right side. Leach takes a designed run to the left, following two blockers and getting the first down for a gain of 11 yards to the 35-yard line. Leach would throw on first down, hitting Summers in the chest, but couldn’t reel it in, and it fell incomplete. On 2nd and 10, Casey Macziewski would get his first carry of the game for a gain of 6 yards. The Rebels would go back to Summers, who slips in the backfield, but gathers himself and gains six yards for a first down with 2:15 left in the quarter. Friend would get the ball but would get met at the line by a Green Wave defender for no gain. Leach would find Devries on the left side again, connecting for a gain of seven yards. On third and three, Summers get the ball once more, running for a gain of eight yards for another first down. Nicholas Waale would get his first run of the game for a gain of nine yards, and the quarter would end scoreless. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton did control the possession clock, running 17 plays to East Grand Forks’ three plays.

2nd Quarter –
Jordan Summers would get the ball to start the half for Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, gaining 2 yards, which would be enough to move the chains again for the Rebels. A huge hole up the middle for Summers on first down would go for again of 11 yards. The Rebels would return to Summers for another 9 yards, down to the Green Wave 6-yard line. Summers would fight off multiple tackles and fight through two Green Wave for the 6-yard touchdown for the first score of the game to make it 6-0 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. Dylan Bitker’s PAT would be good, and the Rebels would take a 7-0 lead with 10:32 left in the half. East Grand Forks would start their next drive on their 19-yard line. Clyde Anderson would get six yards on the dive play to make it second and four.
Caleb Schmiedeberg would be stood up on the next play at the line of scrimmage by Kolton Wagner to force third and four with 9:09 left in the half. Drew Carpenter would fire a quick pass to Samuel Schumacher for an 8-yard reception to give the Green Wave a first down at their 31-yard line. East Grand Forks failed to get the snap off in time and would get a delay of game penalty to make it 1st and 15. Clyde Anderson would get the run for a gain of one to make it second and 14. Carpenter would float a pass to Schumacher on a screenplay, who would run for 14 yards and a first down to keep the drive alive. Anderson would get the call again, running up the middle for a gain of five yards to the 47-yard line. The Green Wave kept it on the ground, going to Schmiedeberg for a gain of three yards, making it third and two with 6:00 left in the half. Carpenter would keep the football, dodging a Rebel jumping the snap for a gain of three yards and another first down. Anderson again up the middle on first down for a gain of six yards, and East Grand Forks continued to march down the field. Schmeideberg would get it up the middle, running for six yards to the Rebels’ 29-yard line. Schmeideberg would dive forward for two yards on the next play, for a second and eight. The Green Wave would try once more for a quick handoff to Anderson, this time, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton was ready for it, allowing a gain of one yard. East Grand Forks would take their first timeout on the Rebels’ 30-yard line with 2:25 left in the half. On third and seven, Carpenter would drop back to find Damian Bushaw for a 14-yard gain and a first down.
A facemask penalty against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would bring the ball down to the seven-yard line with 2:00 minutes left in the half. A Schmiedeberg carry would go for a loss of one yard, making it second and goal. Carpenter would drop back to pass, and Owen Leach would jump the route, intercepting the pass in the endzone, and he would return it down to the Rebels’ 37-yard line with 1:06 left in the half. Owen Leach would then roll out to the right and throw on the run to Brody O’keefe for 18 yards to the Green Wave 45-yard line. On the next play, Leach would pick up a dropped snap, look left and find a wide-open Drew Sheeley for a 22-yard gain down to the 23-yard line. The Rebels would take their first timeout with 44-seconds left in the half. Nicholas Waale would pick up another botched snap for a loss of 10 yards to make it second and 20. Leach would fire a quick strick to O’Keefe for a gain of 19-yards to make it third and one. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would take their final timeout of the half with 28-seconds left in the half. Another bad snap would have Leach recover the ball and lunge forward, falling short of the first down. On fourth and one, Leach rolled to the right, avoiding pressure, and threw a pass that was intercepted by Cooper Smith at the 6-yard line.  East Grand Forks took a knee, and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

3rd Quarter –
East Grand Forks started the second half with the ball on their 37-yard line. The Green Wave would start right back with the run game, going to Caleb Schmiedeberg for back-to-back runs for gains of one and seven yards. On third and two, Drew Carpenter would fake the handoff and keep it himself for a gain of four yards for the first down. Another Carpenter carry would only gain a yard as multiple Rebels met him. On second and nine, Carpenter would follow his lead blocker for a gain of five yards, bringing up third and five. On the option, Carpenter would go for a gain of seven yards for the first down, but there was also a facemask on Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. So the ball would be moved up the Rebels’ 32-yard line for a new set of downs for East Grand Forks. Carpenter would keep the ball for the fifth time this drive for a gain of two yards. Another dive play for a gain of two yards would bring up third and six with 6:50 left in the quarter. Schmiedeberg would get the ball for three yards, forcing fourth and four on the 25-yard line. East Grand Forks would use their first timeout just before the snap to think things over. Carpenter would drop back to pass, looking for Damian Bushaw in the endzone. Brody Friend would break up the pass, forcing a turnover on downs with 5:56 left in the quarter. Jordan Summers would get his first carry of the half, after a busy first half, for a gain of five yards down to the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 30-yard line. Casey Macziewski would get the ball up the middle for a gain of seven yards and a first down for the Rebels. Summers would get another run of four yards to make it second and six yards. Another fumbled snap is recovered by Owen Leach, who lunges back toward the line of scrimmage to minimize the damage, losing only one yard. Leach would drop back on third and seven, and Caleb Zejdlik would bring him down for a sack and a loss of 10 yards. The Rebels would punt the ball away, with the Green Wave starting their drive on their 48-yard line with 2:38 left in the quarter. On the drive’s first play, Carpenter would keep it on the option, being tripped up for no gain. On 2nd and 10, Carpenter would heave a ball downfield, too far for Schmeideberg. The incomplete pass would bring up 3rd and 10, and East Grand Forks would take their second timeout of the half with 1:46 left in the quarter. The Green Wave would catch a break, as Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton would jump offside to make it a more manageable 3rd and five. A quick pass to Cooper Smith for five yards, who would then lateral it to Schmiedeberg, who would fight his way for another two yards to get a total of 7seven yards on the play and a first down on the Rebels’ 40-yard line. Schmiedeberg would get the dive play for a gain of two yards with 1:12 left in the quarter. On second and eight, East Grand Forks would give the ball to Clyde Anderson for three yards. On the last play of the quarter, the Green Wave would go to the option again, and Carpenter would find a seam and dive forward to the 29-yard line for a gain of six yards and another first down. The quarter ends with no new scores, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton up 7-0.

4th Quarter –
Clyde Anderson would get the ball for a gain of two yards to start the quarter for East Grand Forks. On 2nd and 8, Drew Carpenter would run the option and pitch it to Caleb Schmiedeberg for no gain on the play. Drew Carpenter would feel the pressure and throw the ball up off his back foot, and it would be an easy interception for Owen Leach, his second interception of the game. The Rebels would start possession on their four-yard line. Jordan Summers would cut toward the middle for a gain of three yards. Casey Macziewski would get a gain of five yards for a third and two. Summers would dive forward for a gain of three yards and a Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton first down with 8:50 left in the game. Macziewski would get the call again up the middle on first down, this time for 4 yards. Summers would try and bounce out to the right side, but Cooper Smith would meet him at the line of scrimmage for a loss of two yards. On third and eight, the Rebels go to Macziewski, and he is met by a handful of Green Wave players for a loss of two yards to force a punt. East Grand Forks would take over at the Rebels’ 32-yard line with 6:57 left in the game, down by seven. Andreson gets the run up the middle for positive yards. On second and seven, Carpenter avoids a Rebel in the backfield to gain three more yards, making it third and four from the 26-yard line. The Green Wave went back to Anderson up the middle for a yard gain. On 4th and three with 5:20 left in the game, Carpenter looks to pass. With no one open, he scrambles to the 21-yard line, picking up the first down and keeping East Grand Forks’ drive alive. Schmiedeberg gets a gain of five yards on the first down. They go back to Schmiedeberg, who would lose the ball fighting for extra yards, but luckily for East Grand Forks, Zack Jeuch falls on it. On third and seven, Anderson cuts upfield and falls right at the line to gain. With 3:02 left in the game, the chains come out to measure, and East Grand Forks is short by inches. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton takes their first timeout of the half with 2:57 left in the game. A fumbled snap, but Carpenter quickly picks up the ball and gets the first down. On first and goal from the nine-yard line, Carpenter keeps it for no gain. A pitch to John Anderson would go for a gain of one yard for third and eight with 67 seconds left in the game.  Carpenter zipped a pass to John Anderson for a gain of seven yards down to the one-yard line. With time running down, East Grand Forks takes their final timeout with 12-seconds left in the game.  On the next snap, Carpenter couldn’t get the handoff off, but hung onto the ball and pushed his way through to find the endzone to make it 7-6.
EGF went for the two-point conversion, and the Rebels took their second timeout of the half. Carpenter faked the handoff, rolled to his left saw John Anderson in the endzone. The pas was a little short, and Anderson tried to catch the ball, but the Rebel defender never turned his head and ran into Anderson, and the pass was incomplete.  The Green Wave players and coaching staff pleaded for the obvious pass interference call, but it wasn’t called.
The Green Wave had to regroup for an onside kick.  The kick was short and hit a Green Wave player before it went five yards, and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton held on for a 7-6 victory to advance to the state tournament against the Section 7AAA winner in Brainerd on Saturday, November 12.

With the loss, the East Grand Forks Greenwave finish their fantastic season with a 6-5 record. The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels improve to 10-0.
