The Crookston Pirates Boys Hockey team ran into penalty problems and the #5 ranked East Grand Forks Green Wave scored four power play goals on their way to an 8-1 victory in a Section 8A matchup played in East Grand Forks.
East Grand Forks led 2-0 after the first period thanks to goals from Jackson Galstad just 3:58 into the game after he collected a rebound in the slot and lifted a backhand into the top of the net. Then with 3:02 to go in the period Mason Poolman collected a rebound of a Galstad shot at the left post and slid it home for what proved to be the game winner.
The Pirates were able to pull within one when Eric Delorme intercepted a pass in the neutral zone worked his way around a defender and fired a shot past Tucker Brown with 13:06 to go in the period.
East Grand Forks would rebuild their lead with three consecutive goals over the final 7:15 of the period on the power play from Carter Beck, Poolman and an even-strength goal from Tanner Mack.
The third period was all East Grand Forks as the Pirates were held without a shot and the Green Wave tallied two more power play goals finishing 4-for-5 on the power play. “I thought Heppner, Delorme, and Andringa were really good for about two periods and had the effort to keep us in the game,” said Pirate coach Josh Hardy. “We weren’t able to deflect those rebounds to the corner and clean stuff up in front of the net and that was costly for us.”
With the loss, Crookston falls to 0-5-1 and 0-2 in Section 8A play and they will host Minneapolis on Friday at 7:30 p.m. East Grand Forks improves to 7-1-0.
