Eugene Harold Thompson – OBIT

Eugene Harold Thompson, 72, a lifelong member of the Crookston community, passed away unexpectedly at home on May 24, 2024. He was born on October 9, 1951, in Crookston, MN at Bethesda Hospital to parents William and Etta Thompson, but raised lovingly by Etta and her husband Darrell “Bud” Borkenhagen.

Eugene led a fulfilling life characterized by his dedication to work and learning. After graduating from Central Crookston High School, he embarked on a career at American Crystal Sugar. Starting as a house mechanic, Eugene’s expertise and hard work eventually led him to the position of Shop Foreman before his well-deserved retirement in 2013.

Those who knew Eugene described him as quite the character – very intelligent with an unparalleled ability to connect with others while keenly assessing their character. His passion for learning was immense; once captivated by a topic, he would immerse himself completely by delving into numerous books to expand his knowledge. Eugene’s proficiency in engineering was remarkable, mirroring his insatiable thirst for information.

In his leisure time, Eugene pursued his hobbies with unwavering enthusiasm and dedication. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace in fishing and honed his skills in photography. His collection of fishing rods and guns spoke volumes about his deep appreciation for these hobbies.

Eugene Harold Thompson will be remembered for his honesty, articulateness, and zest for life. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his wisdom and warm spirit.

Eugene is survived by his sister, Debra Myatt of Bunker Hill, IL; Nephew, Nathan Hoffman of Crookston; a Great-Niece, Jennifer Hoffman of Minneapolis, MN; and a Great-Nephew, Nash Hoffman of Grand Rapids, MN.  Eugene was preceded in death by his parents:  Darrell and Etta Borkenhagan; Nephews, Bryan and Andrew Hoffman; and a Brother-in-Law, Jim Myatt.

Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements, services are pending at this time.
