FERTILE-BELTRAMI FOOTBALL ADVANCES TO STATE WITH WIN OVER CLEARBROOK-GONVICK

The #2 ranked Fertile-Beltrami Falcons football team scored four second-quarter touchdowns and pulled away to beat the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears in the Section 6 9-Player championship at the Fargodome to advance to state for the third season in a row.

1st Quarter –
Fertile-Beltrami received the opening kickoff and had a good return up to the 39-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Caden Swenby hit Bennett Grunhovd for 17 yards. A two-yard run, a false start, and a loss of two yards brought up third and 13, and the Falcons were unable to convert, and they had to punt.
Clearbrook-Gonvick got the ball and gave a carry to Trevor Solberg for 9 yards. Two plays later, Hassani Brewton got a carry for 7 yards. Three plays later, the Bears had a third and one, and Brewton got a first down with a five-yard run. Brewton completed a pass to Ben Goudge for 15 yards on the next play. Clearbrook-Gonvick got four straight carries for a total of 14 yards. Brewton got a carry for five yards, bringing up a fourth and two. Brewton kept it on fourth down, gained five yards, and got the first down. Brewton got a carry three plays later and ran it in for a six-yard touchdown, giving the Bears a 6-0 lead.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and gave Preston Hanson a carry for four yards, and then Isaiah Wright got a carry for 10 yards. Jonah Harstad had a 47-yard run for a touchdown two plays later. Isaiah Wright got the carry for the two-point conversion, and Fertile-Beltrami took an 8-6 lead.

2nd Quarter –
Clearbrook-Gonvick began the quarter with the ball, went three and out, and had to punt. Fertile-Beltrami took over, and three plays into the drive, Harstad caught a pass for 68 yards. Harstad had a freak leg injury on the play after a shoe-string tackle and had to leave the game. Play resumed after the injury, and after a Caleb Sather five-yard run, Wright took it into the end zone from four yards out. On the two-point conversion attempt, Swenby threw a beautiful pass to a diving, toe-tapping Wright for the successful try, and The Falcons took a 16-8 lead.
Fertile-Beltrami kicked it off to Clearbrook-Gonvick, and on the return, Creed Tollefson recovered a fumble to give it right back to the Falcons. On the next play, Wright took a carry 38 yards for a touchdown to further the Falcon lead to 22-6.
Clearbrook-Gonvick got the ball and gave Alex Churness a carry for seven yards. Three plays later, the Bears had a fourth and two that Brewton converted with a three-yard run. After a short run and an incompletion, Fertile-Beltrami’s Jack Leiser and Caleb Stoltman combined for a sack, and Clearbrook-Gonvick was forced to punt.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and gave a carry to Wright for eight yards. On the next play, Swenby hit Sather for a 26-yard pass. After a two-yard run from Bryer Stream and a five-yard run from Wright, the Falcons gave a carry to Sather, who took it 10 yards. Wright got the carry on the next play, went 20 yards, and scored a touchdown. Strem caught the two-point conversion pass, and Fertile-Beltrami furthered their lead to 30-6.
Clearbrook-Gonvick got the ball and forced Fertile-Beltrami to jump offsides to get five yards. After an incompletion and a pass for no gain, the Bears tried to run the ball for the first and were short, but the Falcons committed a facemask penalty, and Clearbrook-Gonvick got a first down. After a six-yard run, Joe Sorenson intercepted a pass to give the ball back to the Falcons with just under 90 seconds in the half.
Fertile-Beltrami took over after the turnover, and Swenby scrambled for 27 yards. Wright got a carry for nine yards, and after an incomplete, the Falcons gave it to Wright again, and he gained nine yards and got the first down. On the next play, Swenby hit Strem for a 24-yard passing play to bring up first and goal. After an eight-yard run from Wright, Swenby got two straight QB sneaks and punched it in on the second try for the touchdown. Swenby ran in the two-point conversion, and Fertile-Beltrami went into halftime with a 38-6 lead.

3rd Quarter –
Clearbrook-Gonvick received the second-half kickoff, and Churness got two carries totaling seven yards. After a false start, Brewton got a carry for eight yards and a first down. Three plays later, the Bears had third and ten, and Brewton converted again on a 10-yard run. Brewton completed a pass to Solberg for nine yards on the next play. After a run for no gain, Churness got a carry for five yards and a first down. Fertile-Beltrami committed a personal foul penalty that put Clearbrook-Gonvick in the red zone. On the next play, Brewton completed a pass to Ben Goudge for a 14-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 38-12.
Fertile-Beltrami got the ball back and gave a carry to Strem for eight yards. Wright got a carry for nine yards before Swenby completed a pass to Strem for 14 yards. On the next play, Wright got a carry for 24 yards and a touchdown, giving Fertile-Beltrami a 44-12 lead.
Clearbrook-Gonvick got the ball, and after a fumbled snap and three straight incompletions, they turned it over on downs. The Falcons took over and gave two carries to Wright for 12 yards. Strem got two carries for 11 yards before a loss, and an intentional grounding put Fertile-Beltrami way behind the sticks. On third and 26, Swenby completed a pass to Preston Hanson for 12 yards, and on fourth and 14, Swenby kept it himself for 19 yards and a touchdown. Wright caught the two-point conversion, and the Falcons furthered their lead to 52-14.
Clearbrook-Gonvick got the ball back, and on the first snap of the drive, Fertile-Beltrami’s James Flynn recovered a fumble to give it right back to the offense. The Falcons pulled all their starters, and the quarter ended after a run.

4th Quarter –
Fertile-Beltrami started the quarter getting a first down of a defensive facemask penalty. After two runs of no gain and a false start, the Falcons gave a carry to Creed Tollefson, and he gained five yards. Fertile-Beltrami attempted a 36-yard field goal, but it was no good.
Clearbrook-Gonvick took over with most of their backups in the game, and two plays into the drive, Braxton Bjerke ran it for 12 yards. Carver Kroulik was in at quarterback and completed a pass to Bjerke for 10 yards. Ryan Gerlofs got a carry for three yards, and Brady Hagman got a carry for five yards. After a loss, the Bears had fourth and four, and Kroulik completed a pass to Jaret Larson for six yards and a first down. Gerlofs got a carry for 10 yards before Kroulik completed another pass to Bjerke, this time for 22 yards, to make it first and goal. After three runs, it was fourth and goal, and Kroulik ran it in for a touchdown from two yards out to make it 52-20. After the kickoff, Fertile-Beltrami kneeled out the rest of the time and won by a score of 52-20.

Fertile-Beltrami improves to 11-0 and takes on Goodridge-Grygla in the first round of the state tournament in Moorhead. Clearbrook-Gonvick ends their season at 7-4.
