FERTILE-BELTRAMI FOOTBALL FLIES PAST OGILVIE TO ADVANCE TO STATE FOOTBALL SEMI-FINALS

The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons football team started fast and never gave the Ogilvie Lions a chance in the opening round of the Class 9-Man State Tournament. The Falcons defense forced 5 turnovers on their way to a 22-6 win over the Lions in snow and ice on Friday night from Grand Rapids.

1st Quarter –
The Lions received the opening kickoff and began at their own 49 after an onside kick by Fertile-Beltrami that was recovered by Ogilvie, but they were pushed back to their own 42 after a holding penalty negated a nine-yard opening run. Running back Hunter Kenyon quickly recovered the lost yards and made it into Falcons territory on the next play to get to the Fertile-Beltrami 46. The Falcons defense was able to hold, forcing an Ogilvie punt. However, the Lions faked the punt and threw a 12-yard pass to Hunter Kenyon who dashed ahead for a first down to keep the drive alive. Another holding penalty pushed Ogilvie back for another long third-down situation and they would come up short of the first down once again. The Lions chose to go for it this time but Colby Milbradt was sacked on the play by Tucker Bolstad, and Fertile-Beltrami would take over on downs.
The Falcons began their opening drive at their own 35 and gave the ball to running backs Isaiah Wright and Brayden Werpy to get to midfield, but after getting stuffed at the line twice, followed by an incomplete pass to Wright, Fertile-Beltrami was forced to punt the ball back to Ogilvie.
The Lions began their next drive at their own 35 but were backed up yet again with another holding call to their own 29. The Falcons quickly stole the ball back after Caiden Swenby intercepted a pass from Colby Milbradt to give Fertile-Beltrami the ball back at the Lions 42. The Falcons took advantage of the field position and launched a 43-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Wright for the first score of the game. Fertile-Beltrami extended their lead with Running Back Derek Sorenson blasting through the defense to find the endzone again to give them an 8-0 lead.
The Lions began their next drive at their own 42 and found some daylight for Hunter Kenyon to move the chains into Falcons territory, but penalties and a sack by the Fertile-Beltrami defense pushed Ogilvie back into their territory to end the quarter.

2nd Quarter –
The Lions looked to try and convert the long third down conversion but Tucker Bolstad stripped the ball out of Colby Milbradt’s hands for their second turnover of the game, giving Fertile-Beltrami the ball at the Lions 41.
The Falcons pushed into Ogilvie territory with strong runs by Derek Sorenson and Isaiah Wright to get inside the Lions Red Zone. Fertile-Beltrami continued to fly along the ground to get down inside the ten. and Swenby found Derek Sorenson for a 9-yard pass on a 4th down play to get another touchdown for Fertile-Beltrami. The Falcons would convert another successful two-point conversion with a pass to Tight End Brody Raaen to give themselves a 16-0 lead with 8:34 remaining in the half.
Ogilvie began their next drive at their own 35 and looked to convert a short 3rd and four, but a fumble by Hunter Kenyon that was thankfully recovered by Ogilvie stopped their drive and forced them to punt again. The Falcons began their next drive at their own 13 after a 38-yard punt and a block in the back penalty. Fertile-Beltrami looked to move the ball late in the half, but were stopped short of the first down immediately, forcing a punt.
The Lions began their next drive at their own 36 and quickly made it to midfield with a 14-yard pass to Isaiah Voss to move the chains into Falcons territory. Fertile-Beltrami held them from getting another first down with less than a minute to play in the half. The Lions tried to convert another fourth down knowing Fertile-Beltrami would get the ball to start the second half, but Derek Sorenson tipped a pass forcing an incompletion giving the Falcons the ball back. Fertile-Beltrami would elect to take a knee, taking a 16-0 lead into the halftime break.

3rd Quarter –
The Falcons received the kickoff to start the second half and began their first drive of the half at their own 30. Fertile-Beltrami continued to pound the ball on the ground with runs by Derek Sorenson and Brayden Werpy to move the chains to their own 40. The Lions defense soon clamped down on the offense to force a punt.
Ogilvie began their first drive of the half at their own 30 as well and Hunter Kenyon found a whole to sprint 22-yards to get into the Falcons’ territory, which was further compounded by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Fertile Beltrami to move to the Falcons 30. Kenyon continued to attack the Fertile-Beltrami defense with his explosive runs to get inside the Red Zone. Kenyon would not be denied finding the end zone after a three-yard run to get the Lions on the board. Ogilvie looked for Kenyon again on the two-point conversion, but they would be turned away by the Falcons keeping Fertile-Beltrami in front 16-6 with 6:10 to play in the 3rd quarter.
The Falcons answered the call almost immediately with a kick return by Brayden Werpy to start their drive at the Lions 40. Werpy along with Derek Sorenson continued to fly through the Ogilvie defense to the Lions 25, but the Lions were able to hold the offense from going further forcing a fourth down. Fertile-Beltrami looked to convert on 4th down, but a dropped pass in front of the goalline caused a turnover on downs.
Ogilvie took over at their 24 but two more holding penalties pushed them back inside the 15. Colby Mibradt recovered most of it with a long pass to Landen Halvorson but another fumble by Hunter Kenyon was recovered by the Falcons to retake possession at the Lions 39 heading into the fourth quarter.

4th Quarter –
The Falcons began the final quarter with a long pass to Tight End Ryan Van Den Einde to move the chains. Isaiah Wright and Brayden Werpy continued to charge forward into the Lions’ territory to run down the clock before they stopped at the Ogilvie 21. Swenby tried to convert another 4th-down but his pass fell incomplete of his intended receiver to turn the ball over on downs giving Ogilvie the football back.
The Lions looked to try and make it a one-possession game again, and Milbradt found Wide Reciever Isaiah Voss for a first down at their own 33. Ogilvie went into a hurry-up offense to try and score quickly but a Lions pass was intercepted by Braydon Werpy to give the Fertile-Beltrami the ball back at the Ogilvie 26 with 5:39 left in the game.
The Falcons stayed on the ground to continue to run the clock and slowly moved down the field with more runs by Wright and Swenby into the Red Zone. But on a run at the goalline by Swenby, the ball came loose and the Lions recovered the ball at their own 1 to keep the lead at 10 and give them possession of the ball with under three minutes left in the game.
Ogilvie looked to get out of their endzone to keep their season alive, but the Lions fumbled again inside their five and the Falcons recovered again to give them the ball with less than two minutes to play.
Fertile-Beltrami continued to use their run game to force Ogilvie to use their timeouts and drove in the dagger with an 8-yard touchdown run by Caiden Swenby to make it 22-6. The Lions would stop the two-point conversion but the damage was done.
Ogilvie began their final drive at the Falcons’ 43 after a short kickoff by the Falcons. The Lions were able to pick up one first down and stop the clock with 45 seconds at the Fertile-Beltrami 32, but the Falcons recorded a sack to end the game and punch their ticket to US Bank Stadium.

Fertile-Beltrami improves to 11-0 with the win and will play next Thursday in the State Tournament semifinals from US Bank Stadium down in the Twin Cities.
