Fertile beats Red Lake County, falls to Roseau to finish 4th place

Fertile Legion Baseball Post #238 scored seven runs in the sixth inning to beat Red Lake County Post #22 and lost to Roseau Post 24 i6-1 n the third-place game in the Northwest Substate North Division tournament at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.

FIRST INNING
Feetile was retired in order in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the inning, after a leadoff walk to Denny Lanctot, Fertile committed three consecutive errors that scored three runs, putting RLC up 3-0. Kolby Hemmah would then retire the next three batters to get out of the inning.

SECOND INNING
An error started the second inning, and then with one out, back-to-back hits led to an RBI double from Kolby Hemmah, cutting the lead down to 3-1. Ben Gullingsrud was then able to get a pop out and a strikeout to end the inning, stranding two runners in scoring position.
RLF was retired in order in the bottom of the second inning on a lineout, a strikeout and a groundout.

THIRD INNING
Fertile got a one-out single from Teegyn Johnson in the top of the third inning, but Ben Gullingsrud was able to strike out the next two natters to end the inning.
After an out to start the bottom of the inning, Gunnar Halverson walked, and proceeded to score on a Ben Gullingsrud double, giving RLC a 4-1 lead. They got another runner on with a HBP< but Hemmah got a strikeout and caught a pop-up himself to end the inning with no further damage.

FOURTH INNING
With one out in the top 0f the fourth inning, Drew Gullickson reached on an error. He was able to make it all the way to third on a second error, but Gullingsud got a strikeout to end the inning and strand the runner.
Kolby Hemmah struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth.

FIFTH INNING
After a leadoff strikeout, Steven Sather got things going in the fifth inning with a triple to left field, and he would score on the fourth RLC error, cutting the lead to 4-2. Two more strikeouts would then end the frame.
After two quick outs, defense would come back tp bite Fertile, as after their fourth error of the game, Kegan Schmitz would get an RBI single, increasing the lead to 5-2. Cain Cardinal would then single, but Schmitz would be thrown out at third to end the inning.

SIXTH INNING
In the sixth inning the game completely turned on its head. After the first two batters were retired, two errors and a walk loaded the bases. Steven Sather delivered a two-run single to cut the lead to 5-4, and after Johnson singled to load the bases again, a pop-up hit by Bryer Strem fell in no-man’s land, and Fertile took a 6-5 lead. A walk then loaded the bases, and after a pitching change, Easton Fredericks delivered a huge two-run single, making it 8-5. After that, Drew Gullickson singled. which scored one run, but then Fredericks was thrown out at the plate, ending the inning after scoring seven runs.
RLF was set down in order in the bottom of the frame on two groundouts and a flyout.

SEVENTH INNING
Fertile went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.
Red Lake County was able to load the bases in the bottom of the inning with a Denny Lanctot double and two straight walks, but Steven Sather was able to shut the door, eliminating RLC with a 9-5 victory.

Fertile advances to play the winner of Thief River Falls and Roseau, in a game to determine third place in the subsection.

Fertile vs Roseau – 3rd place game

FIRST INNING-
Fertile’s Teegyn Johnson doubled with one out, but was stranded after the next two batters were retired.
Roseau was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

SECOND INNING-
Fertile’s Kolby Hemmah and Drew Gullickson singled to start the inning before the next three batters were retired.
Roseau was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

THIRD INNING-
The first two Fertile batters were retired before Bryer Strem singled and advanced to third base on an error on the left fielder. Caleb Sather singled to score a run and Fertile led 1-0.
The first two Roseau batters were retired before Keane Johnson walked and Anton Klint and Tanner Paulson singled to score a run to tie the game at 1-1.

FOURTH INNING-
Fertile’s Easton Fredricks led off with a walk, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and moved over to third base on an error. Bjerk reached on a fielder’s choice when Roseau got Fredricks out. Benoit reached on a fielder’s choice. After an out, Teegyn Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the next batter was retired.
Roseau’s Trey Mertens led off the bottom of the inning with a single. After an out, Ty Mertens singled and Brendan Simmons walked. A run scored on a passed ball on a suicide squeeze attempt for a 2-1 lead. Eli Kvien doubled to score two runs for a 4-1 lead.

FIFTH INNING-
Fertile was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Roseau’s Paulson doubled and scored on an Eli Wensloff single. Trey Mertens doubled to score a run for a 6-1 lead.

SIXTH INNING-
Bjerk singled to start the inning and Kane Oistad followed with a single. The next three batters were retired.
Roseau’s Klint reached on an error with one out. Paulson walked before the next two batters were retired.

SEVENTH INNING-
Fertile’s Isaac Greve led off the inning with a single. The next two batters struck out before Drew Gullickson singled. The next batter grounded out and Roseau won the game 6-1.

Fertile drops to 5-7 on the year and will play Wadena on Thursday, July 23, at either 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m., or 6:30 p.m. in Fosston in the first round of the Northwest Substate Tournament in Fosston. The Fertile game will be on KROX Radio.
