FOUR PIRATE WRESTLERS PLACE AT RUMBLE ON THE RED

The Crookston Pirate Wrestlers had four competing on the final day of the Rumble on the Red Tournament at the FargoDome. All four Pirates wrestling today placed, and the team finished 14th out of 63 teams with only eight wrestlers competing in the tournament.

PIRATE WRESTLERS –
Ethan Boll – In the semi-finals, #1 ranked Boll took on #6 Colton Long of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and dominated as he built a 12-1 lead before getting the pin with 55 seconds left in the match to advance to the championship for the second straight year.
In the championship, Ethan took on #1 ranked in AAA, Alex Riley of Waconia.  Boll lost to Riley’s teammate and future Gopher Wrestler Max McEnelly in the 195-pound championship last year.  The #1 ranked wrestlers put on a show, but it was Riley that was able to win the match with an exciting 3-2 victory.   Riley improves to 16-1 on the year, and Boll drops to 11-1.

Ethan Bowman – Ethan had a busy tournament with six matches wrestled and one more match that he won by forfeit.  On Friday, Ethan took on Ethan Dennis of Watford City, North Dakota, and had a solid performance to earn a 5-1 victory.  Bowman scored the first points halfway through the first period with a takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the second period.  Dennis scored his only point of the match with an escape 10 seconds into the second period, and Ethan took a 2-1 lead into the third.  In the final period, Ethan scored on an escape 16 seconds in and followed by a takedown 30 seconds later, and held on to win 5-1.   In the next wrestleback match, Bowman took on Hunter Gruchow of West Central Area.  Halfway through the first period, Gruchow scored on a takedown, and with 24 seconds left in the period, Bowman answered with a reversal, and the match was tied at 2-2.  Gruchow was injured late in the first period, and he wasn’t able to continue. Bowman won the match by injury forfeit.
In the consolation semi-final, Bowman was supposed to take on Logan Butzon of Jackson County Central, but he had to forfeit due to an injury, so Bowman cruised to the third-place match.
In the third-place match, Bowman took on Wyatt Kosidowski of Fargo Davies.  Bowman scored the first points with a takedown halfway through the first period for a 2-0 lead going into the second period.  Kosidowski scored two nearfall points with 41 seconds left in the second period to tie the match at 2-2 going into the third.  The final two minutes were dominated by Kosidowski as he scored two points on a reversal, two more on a nearfall, and added two more nearfall points with 19 seconds left in the match to win 8-2, and Bowman finished fourth place.

Gavyn Hlucny – Gavyn had a busy tournament with five matches wrestled in two days.  The first match in wrestlebacks on Friday was against Dutch Hedblom of Rock Ridge.  There was no score after the first period and Gavyn scored a point 42 seconds into the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the third period.  In the final period, Gavyn had a great final period and was able to score three nearfall points with 22 seconds left before winning by pin to advance.
Hlucny had to take on Grant Marr of Forest Lake, the #9 ranked 126-pounder in Class AAA.  Marr started the match with a takedown and followed with three nearfall points for a 5-0 lead after the first period.  Marr scored on a reversal in the second period for a 7-0 lead.  In the third, Gavyn scored on a takedown 30 seconds into the period, but Marr responded with a reversal and two nearfall points to win the match 11-2.
In the seventh-place match, Gavyn wrestled Hunter Heim of Bemidji.  Gavyn started the match with a takedown, but Heim scored a reversal with a few seconds left, and the match was tied at 2-2.  Both wrestlers were warned for stalling in the second period, and with nobody scoring, it was tied 2-2 going into the third period.  After a scoreless third period, it forced a sudden victory overtime round.  The first wrestler to score a point wins the match.  With nine seconds left in the overtime, Gavyn scored a takedown to win the 7th-place match 4-2.

Carter Coauette – Carter had a busy two days while wrestling six matches.  In the first wrestleback match on Friday, Carter took on Will Goldschmidt of Waconia.  Nobody scored in the first period, and Goldschmidt scored a point on an escape three seconds into the second period.  His lead didn’t last long because Carter scored two points on a takedown and followed with two nearfall points before getting the win by pin at 2:32.
In the next match, Carter took on Corter Doney of Rapid City (S.D.) Stevens High School.  Nobody scored in the first period.  Doney took a 1-0 lead with an escape 21 seconds into the second period.  He added two more points with a takedown halfway through the period for a 3-0 lead.  Nobody scored in the third, and Doney won the match 3-0.
The loss put Coauette into the seventh-place match against  Connor Gmail of Mora (the #8 ranked wrestler at 160 pounds in Class AA).  Gmahl took a 2-0 lead with a takedown halfway through the first period.  In the second, Gmahl added two more points on a reversal for a 4-0 lead. Carter scored his first point on an escape halfway through the period and trailed 4-1 going into the final period.  Carter scored two points on a takedown with 63 seconds left in the match to get within a 4-3 deficit, but Gmahl answered with a reversal with 42 seconds left to win the match 6-3, and Coauette finished eighth place.
