Highland Elementary first graders engage with nature through Get Kids Outdoors

First-grade students at Highland Elementary became friends of nature, as they recently spent time with Get Kids Outdoors for an incredible day of nature-based learning. School officials say the students had a blast getting their hands dirty and exploring the world beneath their feet.

Their afternoon was packed with amazing activities, including planting pumpkin & gourd seeds, enjoying delicious “Edible Soil” dirt cup snacks, conducting a thorough Soil Investigation, and exploring “What’s down in the dirt” with a Science Spin.

First-grade teacher Erica Uttermark says students and staff were so grateful for this hands-on, engaging experience that connected their curriculum directly to the outdoors. First graders have taken home their pots and know exactly what they need to do to help their plants grow.

The mission of Get Kids Outdoors is simple: to get kids outdoors. The organization provides outdoor recreational opportunities for youth with limited opportunities to participate. By experiencing the excitement and challenge of these activities, children gain confidence, develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors, and carry these meaningful learning experiences with them for decades.
