HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO HOST BOOK FAIR OCTOBER 17-18

Highland Elementary School will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair on Tuesday, October 17, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, October 18, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Highland School Library.

Every book in the library for sale will be covered up in plastic sheeting for preservation prior to the start of the book fair. Proceeds from the book fair will go back into the Highland School Library, and funds can also go to classrooms with donation requests from teachers at Highland School.

“We always do teacher request bins, so each teacher from each class can request books,” said Event Coordinator Tina Mason, “Parents and children can look at their request, pay for the book, and put it in their bin for the teachers in the classroom.”

For those who cannot attend the Book Fair can shop online. All orders will ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders exceeding $25. Proceeds from online purchases will also go to Highland School. “When a person goes online, they will find Highland School and the proceeds will still go to Highland School,” said Mason, “All of the proceeds we make basically go back to the library to go back toward the library and upkeep for books.”

Mason also said when a library looks to replace leather-bound books, it can cost $30 to $50 per book, which can add up quickly. Some top sellers from past years at Highland School have been the Dog Man and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and holiday books about Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Mason believes book fairs are especially important for elementary students to attend because it keeps students interested in literature. “Try and get them there, buy a book or two, reading is important. It helps with schooling and being confident in their work, said Mason, “This is very important; kids are constantly checking out books, and they tore up and beat up, and sometimes not even brought back. So we need to be able to have the funds to replace them.”
