At approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3 the Grand Forks Fire Department responded to a reported deck fire at 3500 30th Avenue South.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find that the fire had been extinguished by the actions of some quick acting bystanders. One bystander noticed the fire burning on a table and was able to climb to the second-floor deck. The neighbors on the third-floor deck were able to hand down a bucket of water which was used to extinguish the flames. Firefighters used a ladder to assist the bystander down to the ground. The damage was confined to the deck area and estimated at $2500.00
The fire investigation determined the cause of the fire to be the improper extinguishment of smoking materials.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters and the exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Eighteen firefighters from Grand Forks responded to the call and the Grand Forks Police Department and Altru Ambulance were also on scene assisting.
The Grand Forks Fire Department would like to remind everyone to use approved receptacles for the disposal of all smoking materials.
