IT’S CARAMEL APPLE TIME AT WIDMAN’S CANDY IN CROOKSTON

The one beautiful thing about cooler weather in September can be found at Widman’s Candy Shop in downtown Crookston.  George and Lois Widman, as they do every September, are busy making caramel apples and the first day they sold the tasty treats was Thursday (September 12) and a steady flow of customers stopped by to get the handmade goodies.

KROX stopped by Widman’s Candy on Thursday afternoon and asked George why they sell the caramel apples in the fall. “We look for cool temperatures,” said Widman. “We don’t want to get too close to the start of September because it’s not cool usually, so around the 10th of September usually.”

The ingredients are pretty simple. “Five pounds of corn syrup, five pounds of condensed milk and two and a half pounds of sugar,” said Widman. “We use the Granny Smith apple.  Why do we use Granny Smith? When you take an apple and dunk it into the hot caramel, once you take it and put it on the slab, it starts to break down.  A Granny Smith will hold up to the heat better than any other apple, and the tart taste with the caramel makes a good combination.”

George said he had been busy thanks to KROX. “I have been very busy today, and the reason why is I started running an ad on KROX,” said Widman. “I get the ad every year, and it has been a good day.”
