JACK GARMEN SCORES 1,000TH POINT, TAKES 100TH CHARGE IN PIRATE LOSS TO ADA-BORUP-WEST

Crookston Pirate senior Jack Garmen recorded the 1,000th point and 100th charge taken of his career, but it wasn’t enough as the Ada-Borup-West (ABW) Cougars used their athleticism and solid first-half shooting to come away with a 79-61 victory in a game played in Ada.  The game was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

FIRST HALF –
ABW scored the first three points of the game before Garmen took the 100th charge of his career, which is a school record by 69!  “With the short season last year, I wasn’t sure if he would be able to get there,” said Coach Greg Garmen. “They kept piling up this year and he likes to do it and is good at it.  Jack said he’s not taking any more this year.” The charge gave the Pirates a spark as Hunter Nicholas scored the first of his points with a basket in the paint to get within a 3-2 deficit.  After a Cougar basket, Garmen scored, and after another Cougar basket, Nicholas scored another basket in the paint and Hesby followed with a basket to give Crookston an 8-7 lead over four minutes into the game. ABW took over the game by picking up the defensive pressure and getting steals and several block shots to keep Crookston scoreless for over five minutes while the Cougars scored 17 straight points for a 24-8 lead halfway through the half.  ABW continued to build on their lead and took a 43-22 lead into halftime.  “They shot the ball very well,” said Coach Garmen. “They seemed to make most of their three-pointers and we struggled taking care of the ball and to get anything to go.”

SECOND HALF –
ABW came out strong in the second half with a 9-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 54-24 three minutes into the half.  Crookston was trailing 64-36 when they put a nice run together behind the big strong freshman, Hunter Nicholas.  Hunter made two free throws, added a rebound and a basket, added another rebound and a basket before Jacob Hesby made a three-pointer.  The run was wrapped up with a three-point play from Garmen, which he followed up with a three-pointer for the 1,002nd point of his career.  The game was stopped, Jack got a big hug from his coach/father Greg Garmen and was congratulated by his teammates and the Ada-Borup-West fans also gave a standing ovation.  Jack was emotional after the hug from his dad and was rewarded with a short stint on the bench to take it all in. “I knew it was going to be tough with the short season last year,” said Coach Garmen. “You could tell it was on his mind because he was shooting awful early.  He made enough plays and his teammates set him up.  It was fitting it was on a three-pointer.”  After play resumed, Nicholas added another basket and Crookston trailed 69-55 with three minutes left.  That is as close as Crookston would get and ABW held on for a 79-61 victory. “Jack would rather have the win any night,” said Coach Garmen. “It was nice for him to get on the list and hopefully we can find a way to beat somebody next week.”

Crookston ends the regular season with a 5-21 record and will either be at Perham or Pelican Rapids in the first round of the Section 8AA Boys Basketball tournament on Thursday.  ABW improves to 15-9 and will play at Mahnomen/Waubun in the first round of the Section 8A Boys Basketball tournament on Thursday.
