Joyce Elaine Sullivan – OBIT

Joyce Elaine Sullivan, 97, of Crookston, MN, beloved mother and member of the community passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025.  She was born in Crookston, on June 26, 1927, to Clarence and Bernetta (Savard) Capistran.

Joyce graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1945.  She met Leo “Alf” Raymond Sullivan and the pair were married on October 22, 1947, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church.  It wasn’t long before the couple started a family and it grew to eight children.  She became known for her famous fudge, donuts, and homemade malts.  Joyce will be remembered for her “whistle” to call the Sullivan’s home.  Joyce was an amazing mother, truly a hard worker, if she wasn’t downstairs using the wringer washer then she could be found ironing, always taking care of others in some way.
A gentle spirit, Joyce found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life.  A true testament to her giving heart, Joyce spent a lot of her life volunteering in the community. She was an active member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church, delivered Meals on Wheels, and volunteered at the Villa St. Vincent.  Joyce enjoyed bridge, and the door was always open for friends and family visits.

Joyce’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and a profound commitment to family and community. As we remember her today, we celebrate the countless lives she touched through her generous spirit and boundless love. Though she has departed from this world, her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.

Joyce is survived by her children:  Mike Sullivan, Jim (Bonnie) Sullivan, Mark (Jennifer) Sullivan, and Doug Sullivan, all of Crookston, MN, Larry (Brenda) Sullivan of Fargo, ND, Keith (Kathy) Sullivan of Bloomington, MN, Jennifer Bollacker of Littleton, CO, and Julie (Tim) Kieffer of Basalt, CO; Grandchildren:  Adam Sullivan, Matt Sullivan, Lori Sullivan, Hayley Pierce, Molly Sullivan, Eric Sullivan, Cara Pester, Eli Sullivan, Corey and Joseph Bollacker, Sean Sullivan, Evan Kieffer; as well as multiple great-grandchildren, and her sister Noreen Erickson.  Preceded in death brothers, Vaughn (Elaine) Capistran, Duane (Violet) Capistran; brother-in-law, Gary Erickson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The Funeral Service honoring Joyce’s life will be held at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Crookston, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM.  Visitation with the family will begin at 9:30 AM.  Please join the family for fellowship and a luncheon immediately following Mass.  Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery following the luncheon.

May God Bless the Memory of Joyce Elaine Sullivan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church
