The Crookston Pirate Boys Hockey team tied the game with 24 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the Minneapolis Nova’s scored a goal 4:31 into overtime to win the game 6-5 in a game played at the Crookston Sports Center.
Minneapolis killed off a 5-on-3 Pirate powerplay in OT then didn’t let Crookston out of their own end on an extended shift before Michael Woodhouse fed a pass for the left faceoff dot to Martin Keehn across the slot that he lifted over the pad of Noah Dragseth for the game-winner with 4:31 to go in overtime to lift Minneapolis to a 6-5 win.
The two sides skated to a scoreless first period that only saw six shots on goal. Both sides blocked several shots and played a very strong period on both the fore and back check.
In the second period, the Pirates got on the board first just under three minutes into the period when Joey Doda batted home the second rebound on a shot from Eric Delorme on a play in front of the net initiated by a shot from Brock Heppner (assist). Minneapolis would get the next two goals when Ben Murray scored on the power play with 10:38 to go in the period and Tom Mullin put Minneapolis in front with 6:46 to go. Doda would tie the game up with 3:37 left in the second, on a powerplay goal when he redirected a Ben Andringa shot for the right circle.
Minneapolis would regain the lead three times in the third period, first with 13:32 when Mullin scored his second of the night. The Pirates would tie the game with 9:00 to play when Andringa was sprung by Sam Overgaard (assist) and beat Lucas White. Just over a minute later Minneapolis took a 4-3 lead when Sam Pearson (goal) fired a bad angle shot from the boards just above the goal line which hit Dragseth’s stick and popped over his shoulder. Doda would complete his hat trick with 5:54 to go when he made a strong play along the boards on a dump attempt just inside the right point and then used a burst of speed to get by the defender and outrace him to the goal tying the game at 4-4. “He won a battle at the blue line skated through some pressure, went in and made a beautiful, beautiful play there to get the goal,” said Pirate coach Josh Hardy. “He took that penalty there early that they scored on and kind of felt like he let the boys down there. He wanted to make that up and put the team on his back and that’s good to see.”
A Pirate penalty gave Minneapolis a power play with 4:58 to play and just 12 seconds later Simon Weed put them back in front when he found a loose puck and scored for a 5-4 lead. The Pirates pulled their goalie, Noah Dragseth with 65 seconds to play and were the benefactor of an icing call when a clearing attempt by Minneapolis hit the right post and never crossed the goal, but was ruled an icing. On the ensuing faceoff, Minneapolis failed multiple times to clear the zone before Delorme fed Jacob Anderson at the blue line. Anderson’s shot hit traffic in front of the goal and the puck fell onto Delorme’s stick, who wristed it past White to tie the game 5-5 with 24 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
In overtime, Minneapolis killed off a 5-on-3 Pirate powerplay in didn’t let Crookston out of their own end on an extended shift before Michael Woodhouse fed a pass to Martin Keehn across the slot and he lifted the shot over the Pirate goalie’s pads and found the back of the net for the game-winner with 4:31 to go in overtime to lift Minneapolis to a 6-5 win.
