Updated January 25, 2022
Updated weekdays at 11 a.m., with data current as of 4 a.m. the previous business day.

Data is for cases that were tested and returned positive. At-home test results are not counted by MDH.

All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Many data points are collected through an online survey or during case interviews; however, not all cases are interviewed. Case interviews are focused on people under 18 years old, hospitalizations, deaths, and people with vaccine breakthrough or variants. Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status.

Positive PCR test results are considered confirmed cases. Positive antigen test results are considered probable cases. All probable cases get the same public health follow up and recommendations as cases confirmed by PCR tests.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary and some reports require verification before counting as a case, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not exactly equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

We continuously receive case reports and work to confirm, process, and report them as quickly as possible. Newly reported cases may not include every case reported to us since the last data update.

Reports awaiting review

The recent surge of COVID-19 cases is creating the highest volume of lab reports since the beginning of the pandemic. The high volume of reports means some cases are waiting to be processed in our system. As we take steps to meet the demand, we want to continue to provide data that reflects what is currently happening in Minnesota.

The number of daily newly reported cases in early January 2022 was lower than the number of reports coming into our system (reflecting an undercount). As we catch up on reports waiting to be processed, the number of newly reported cases will likely be higher than the number of reports coming into our system (reflecting an over count). The “Estimated number of newly added positive reports awaiting review” is an estimate of the number of new positive reports that came into the system to be processed since the last data update. This helps estimate how much of an over or undercount there is by showing the level of reports coming in along with cases being reported out.

Estimated number of newly added positive reports awaiting review 19,525

The data below show cases that have been processed and reports waiting to be processed by specimen collection date – the date someone took a test. Reports awaiting review are estimates and may change as reports are fully processed. Information on reports awaiting review only appears in this section of the situation update. The remaining data on this page is based on cases that have been fully processed.
